long story short, went out to the car and started it. valves were tapping and heard timing chain noise. towed it home and put it on the lift and the lower driver side guide is broke.

What are the chances that my valves are bent? I was gonna change everything when i got the car but i found out the timing set was like $500 so i didnt because im a student and couldnt afford it.

how bad of a job is it to change everything? where can i get the chains, sprockets, guides, and tensioners for cheap?

seems to me like everyone is having these timing chain problems these days first me and then a couple more people on the forums, if your cars still running then i dont think your valves are bent. But heres what i would recommend......if your planning on fixing that motor i would say dont waste your time...for now...buy another motor since you did say yourself you can only find the whole timing chain assembly for $500 with the money you can get yourself a motor with 80k on it, to change a timing chain you have to have the whole motor out anyways(makes things alot easier) so either way your looking at it you still have to take the engine out. So wouldnt it make you feel alot better to put in a brand new motor that has no problems? and the other keep on the side and you can build that motor slowly, piece by piece. Thats what im doing. Knowing this forum people are going to be coming on this thread bashing my idea. Then again everyman to his own opinion. Just trying to help you out and give you my best advice, tell me how everything works out

im just gonna get a timing set and fix it. the way i see it i could go buy a "80k mile" motor and it do the same thing to me next week. ive already pulled off the front cover and the oil pan. I know the kit is a bit pricey but i think i'm just gonna fix it and then buy a sr20 and slowly get that ready while im driving the car. i had planned on something a little less common than a sr but i have a more custom project that i want to get started on in the next year or two and im just gonna keep my s14 as a daily

these are the timing kits if anyone is interested

If you are going to just get an SR, then why not just wait and get that? I would pick up a beater for like 200-300 bucks in the mean time.

How does this have anything to do with the OP's problem? You didn't say anything helpful in your last two posts. He's asking for some help and you chime in with "z0mG t3h sR20 aM t3H 5ux0rz0r." Go to nico with that childish shit.

OP, seriously don't rebuild the timing chain guides and any damage done by breaking them. Get a used engine. It will last you til you have your SR20 and get it built. If you aren't considering leaving that KA in the car for the next 3-5 years, then don't bother rebuilding it.
