Copied from a partsmax forum? Ionno up late nerding out...
****Secret diff mod: Instead of welding they put thrust washers in a VLSD to force it to lock up hard.
Initial torque is a very high 19kgf-m meaning it acts like a welded diff but noone has done this yet so thay don't know how long it will last.
Ratings: 0 to 5
5 on Initiation
3 on switch back (feint)
3 on ease of angle adjustment with gas petal
2 on sound
I have a jdm oem lsd with differnt gears, now with the rb25 in thurr, i see the lsd not grabbing so much...
anywho, anyone got anyinfo on this? anyon got a lsd out to peep it and report back! This could be a VERY nice mod to have, seeing some of us are cheap and dont wanna toss in $900 for a kazz...
well either way, I will try it and find out sooner or later, just hoping someone else is as stoked as I am...
Nismo aftermarket diff grabs at 8kgf, so this grabs mean...
Peace out.

I have heard about this, hella old school.... Talks about shimming some plates in the VLSD, but also wears out the lsd much faster too... Dunno the technical details....

yeah i did mine last summer...
it only grabs as hard as the shim's thickness... a 1.1 shim alone is not as tight - not as much like a welded.

I knew a guy who slapped too thick of shims and needless to say, the diff detonated.

2 X .8 shims is the most i'd do - its what i did - if i had it to do over i'd do a 1.1 or a 1.2

so you would say 1.2 mm is most?

I was gonna do this to replace my welded, since welded around town seriously sucks...
But nobody has ever reported on how their diffs have held up after a period of time of driving on them, so I never looked into it too seriously...
So...
Those of you that have done this awhile back, please report on how they have held up and how much abuse they have had?

have mine for 9 months now i put 3 .8 shims, acts like a 2way, scrapes tires when turning making screeching noise but im used to it i drive the car at least 20 miles a day for work and did all driftnirvana and clubloose events in 08 with it and it still holds on like the way it did when i did it . only thing is that u need to be aware of its behavior specially on the rainy and snowy days, hope this helps

might as well weld it?
how everyone is describing it, it pretty much sounds like one.
just wanna try something new?

with a 1.2 it'll be better - the 2 .8's make it pretty locked. 3 .8's is just overkill since 2 .8's is a complete lock anyway.
a 1.1 or 1.2 gets it where its still streetable.
^^according to ozzies mine's locked hard.

Yeah see, if I'm doing this, I want it to have a little give so that tight parking lot type turn stuff won't cause tire scrubbing, since I do have a welded diff already.

Hey just curious Smelly240. Is that 1.1-1.2 on top of the existing shim thats in the vlsd or additional 1.1-1.2 all together total ?

yeah, we have a guy up here at our base who threw one too many shims in his diff. When it exploded his car jumped into the air a few inches. He posted up the video of it on our website, shit was crazy

Yah, Slide Society in ZY was the guy im talking about. He was showing me how to shim it at the hobby shop one day. A week later, shit detonated cuz he used too large of shims. I need to check my diff and see if i got any shims...I might shim it to make it more aggressive.
