You're attempting to buy a SR20ed 240 in CA?

Here is my advice: don't.

yeah dont

this is what i did when i bough my dd.

-went and met a seller at a midas got the car hooked up and tested for error codes (obd2) find a tuner shop to look aty the sr your in socal so it shouldnt be hard.
-paid with cash made a contract that i typed stating the deal going on and how much he agreed to selll the car for etc.(for my records get signatures etc)
- filled out bill of sale
- went to dmv paid sales tax and got the car registered to me
- then went and got a inspection

thats what you do with a normal legal car. but in your case youll need to find a sr friendly shop to get a inspection or a friend.

By SR20 shop.
He means a shop that will illegally pass your car through smog for a higher price.

Most likely, if your asking these questions, you dont know a shop like that.
And no one will give you the info to their shop that will do it.
I know I don't tell anyone.

Buy a KA2.4 car.
Build suspention for awhile.
get cool rims.
learn about engines while doing regular maintenence and oil changes.
And when your 20, the car will be ready for a SR or what ever you want.

BTW, buying SR20's that havent been rebuilt is the same as buying a KA engine.
Its old and will eventually go when you start driving it hard.
So buy KA, Rebuilt a SR20 in the garage, and build it for more HP than stock ;)

Cant i just check the compresssion and leak down test on the sr20det, and regular stuff?or do i need to check other things before i buy? thanks....i want that s14 BAD!

Dude, you're 18 and you're going to spend $11K on a car over a decade old? :spank:

You get two years of care-free driving, at least until you're pulled over (and you will be) then what? :hahano:

negotiated down to 10.2, comes with 2 sets of wheels and 2 driver seats. mods well over 15k. ive been searching for a month on sr20dets in CA, and there isnt many people that got their cars impounded except mostly fix it tickets due to modified exhaust. -this exhaust being black coated/i wont be driving like a maniac at all/no tint. if i drive fine, wont i not have any reason for cops to pull me over?

18 year olds do not buy $11K cars to take sunday drives in. I was 18 once and I understand how self-control works. Just curious, but are you paying cash or using a loan?

Wow, seems like a stupid purchase at your age.

11K
What are you planning on doing with it?
If you wanna drift/grip/or drag it, you should start with a stock car and build it yourself. And as you get better, the car will grow and get better parts with you.
A fully built car will probably hold you back a bit.
You need to feel loose suspension, to learn weight transfer.
You need low HP so you learn to make the most of your Hp, find the proper line, and learn peddle control.

BTW, the car isnt good for 2 years.
look at the date that the car was originally purchased off the lot.
thats the date you need to take it in on every 2 years. Not from when you purchase it, or when he got it to pass after 8 extensions.

I had to do my car 4 months after I bought it.

But if your set on this car.
Yeah, leak down and compresion.
Have a REAL mechanic do it.
Someone your family knows or at least neutral.
Not his shop or his mechanic!

Just looked at the thread.
He is pumping up the fact the A/C works as a selling point??
i would maybe offer $8000.00
alot of who cares parts.
Like the seats and rims.
Bit of suspension work and exhaust, what car doesnt have it.
Engine "says" 302HP. thats kinds cool.
NO FRONT BUMPER SUPPORT. that means the slightest crash/rear end someone, and that intercooler and radiator are smashed to shit along wiht the rad support and the front of the engine.
Car will be totalled.
So you will hae to fab something up as a bumper support.

imo

I say do what ya want dude.

I doubt you will ALWAYS drive it nice and easy. But dont spend $$ on a car others tell ya to buy because it will be more practical, or better for you in the long run. Because if your intentions are to build this same car the kid is sellin, then you will in turn spend more money on it.

On the reliability subject.. When signal did the swap did the headgasket get changed? or did they just stick motor in and hook up? If headgasket wasnt changed it probably wont be too reliable during "spirited" driving. I have had quite a few friends that swapped in the sr without changing the headgasket, and it usually blew approxamitely 15k miles after they swapped it. If headgasket has been changed your probably good unless you start throwing major abuse at it (major spirited driving without proper support mods) or high boost for prolonged periods.

I dont know what to tell ya about the "FUZZ". Ya could go a long time without being hassled, or you could get hassled once a month. All depends on how ya drive it, where ya live, how it sounds, etc..

11k is a bit much for an 18 year old isent it? i mean, im 17 and i know what its like to want shit like that but you gotta think about schooling and shit bro. pick up an unmoded or a slightly moded KA for a hell of alot cheaper and build it yourself. thats what im doin. and u get the satisfaction of doing the work yourself instead of just buying it all done. ultimitly its up to you but id go a little cheaper and i little more stocky:P

you ever driven a rear wheel drive car before with that kind of power, granted it's not a lot. have you?

I paid 8300 for my car, and it's a piece of shit, I'm roughly about 6 grand in replacement parts and new aero.

add that up...

and I still have to spend... took my tranny apart and discovered I need a new clutch... so yeah this weeks check replaces drivetrain and oil components.

prepare to spend a lot of money owning that car... how's the turbo? any shaft play, doesn't matter if the car has already been smogged, it requires a smog AGAIN to register it regardless if it was just smogged 2 weeks ago.

If I had 11k saved up, I wouldn't buy another 240.

Mine has well over 11k, but if I had that cash in hand, I'd put it toward something newer(like a 350z).

Advice...don't do it.

I agree. Buying a modded car is stupid, you're buying someone else's headache. Buying an old car and paying twice what it's worth is stupid, because you're already loosing your ass on it. Buying a car that is a police magnet is stupid. And buying a car at 18 because it's cool and you just want one but don't know a thing about it is unbelievably stupid.

But if you feel you have to have it, go for it. You've been warned.

Some good advice: Save for another year, then buy a used C5 Corvette for ~$15K.

Pros:
Legal
Powerful in stock form
Doesn't have bosozoku-tards ruining the reputation
Reliable since some hillbilly in a machine shop didn't do the wiring for the engine

Cons:
Will probably have high insurance

Why exactly would you want a car like this on the road?

If you're buying this car with all of these mods, I don't believe for an instant that it's going to remain a daily driver (meaning no "spirited" driving, track days, etc.).

You've completely missed my point. We KNOW you like the S14. We KNOW you like the power that this one has.

Let me lay it out for you, and then some.

1) You want a daily driver. You don't need any mods to drive 20 miles. The car that you have now gets better gas mileage, is legal, and will overall serve you better.
2) Driving a modded car will get you unwanted attention.
3) At your age, you should find a better use for your money.
4) You seem like you're on the path to end up as a typical street racer and, as we're very close in age, raise my insurance costs. Please don't.

If you're only driving 20 miles to work, why do you need to be fast? And why do you need a manual? For a commuter car there's nothing better than an auto. Brakes cost less than $100, you're looking to spend 100x times that.

You like unwanted attention, so it's cool if the guys at the gas station follow you home, drag you out of the car, beat you to within an inch of your life, then steal it? Interesting.

You've been caught in an outright lie and now you're backpedaling, which is just sad. Your reasons don't match your goals, and then you throw in a drifter's name to inspire confidence in your choice. Essentially you've just proven our argument, you DO plan to drive like an immature fuck, street race, attempt to drift, and look cool doing it. You won't. You're immature, ignorant, and full of false hope. If you buy the car it will get stolen, you'll crash, or it will be impounded. We can only hope it all happens at once.

silviaslave
01-05-2009, 04:56 PM
quote from 240sx forums- dont get tons of flashy gauges, extremely loud exhausts (unless you want massive horsepower gains), body kits (which are also huge cop attractions) and most importantly, DO NOT GET UNDERCARRIAGE KITS (i will flame on you). BUT the main thing is, dont drive like an idiot. everyone knows that cops dont like import cars, but everyone lies when they all say that the cop pulled them over for just the exhaust. you have to do something (speeding, peeling out, shooting flames *cough**cough*). be somewhere(races, touge), or whatever . i had a cop follow me on the freeway for miles, i stayed at 65, he couldnt do shit. so he got off at the next exit. sure there are times when a cop will tag you when you're driving slow, but that's not too common. as for the smogging, find someone that'll pass you. it's worth the extra hundred or so to pass. and unless you're at the races, the cop most likely wont pop your hood. so the most you get, is an exhaust ticket.

ESmorz
01-05-2009, 05:01 PM
Nevermind you can't have my car.

You really are special kind of retard. In case you didn't know cops can pull you over for anything they want. Once you are pulled over they can search your vehicle and inspect for mods.

So if they see exhaust on an import they might go hey, that guy might have a motor swap or it might have a deleted cat. blah blah. I got pulled over for a dim brake light. They searched my whole car, me, all my friends, popped my hood etc... and the car is stock.

Lastly, sympathy from Zilvia?

You're 18 so get a 96-00 Honda Sedan and put the rest in a savings account. Keep saving and use it as a down payment on a car or house when you get a real job. I'm graduating in May, hopefully going to grad school, and you have no idea what I'd do for $11K. :hahano:
