View Full Version : Windows 7 Beta 1

So I got a hold of the first (and probably only) beta of Windows 7 and I must say it's a nice improvement over Vista.

Installation was very quick (around 15mins) and this beta is surprising stable and very zippy even on my old P4 computer.

I like some of the new GUI features such as "Aero Shake" and "Aero Snap".

However, the most noticable change is also one I'm not sure many people will welcome...and that's the new taskbar.

It's hard to explain, but its so simple...yet complex at the same time. The combination of shortcuts and running programs is nice and clean to the overall design, but its really hard to tell what is a shortcut and what is a running program (by the default settings). It's kind of like a combination of quick launch and taskbar buttons with a hint of OSX dock (with how you can shift the icons around).

For example when you click on an icon and run a program, you can't click on the icon again to run a new instance. Instead you have to right-click and select that programs name in the new "Jump List". It makes sense to me, but I have a feeling most people might be instantly turned off by this feature. I really hope in the final version there is an option to revert to a "classic" style taskbar.

Other than that, I'm sure that those of you that are interested have probably read all kinds of reviews and even found a way to obtain it.

For obvious reasons I can't say how I acquired this, but Microsoft does plan to release a public beta next month.

Anyone else give this a try?

Is it made for idiots like Vista, or is it cool like XP?

Im very interested. Only reason i held back on buying a new laptop was because of Vista...
Do you know if 7 has that security feature that asks for permission to run every little thing?
Was playing with a friends new desktop it was very annoying...

seriously. the main thing that made me switch back to xp was how dipshit friendly Vista was.

I was very reluctant with Vista for a long time until I got my hands on the Ultimate edition. After I got all the idiot proofing turned off it has ran great for me, and doesnt shit on itself like XP used to do sometimes. When it comes time to dump a program out of memory cause it has locked up it gives me no issues and has so far never crashed explorer. Now I would stay away from the low end Vista releases, they are meant for the walmart computers they come on, and for peeps who only play the solitary!

There's nothing revolutionary about Windows 7, its the same Kernel as Vista. It should just be called Vista SE. Much like 98SE fixed all the bugs 98 had (well, almost all the bugs).

i got vista ultimate 64bit for free... turned off some of the features and runs rock solid and its quick and doesnt get garbaged up like typical xp over time... xp would freeze up for me since i used to tweak the fuck out of it.

Hopefully when 7 comes out, microsoft will do a free offer for monitoring your activity like they did with vista last year *thats how i got it free from microsoft, just installed their monitoring software on a spare xp hard drive that i would just randomly boot up from time to time to surf the net while letting it report to them what i was doing, then switch to my good hdd for everything else*

I agree, I reinstalled and tweaked Vista and now its fucking golden. From the screenshots of Windows 7 I have seen, it looks like the same exact thing as Vista.

I don't know how to comment on that. Vista is not bad and XP is not the best thing ever. XP gets boggy over time where no such issues occur with Vista. If you turn off most of the features it's a nice OS.

If you've never used Vista for atleast 30 days and <3 XP, then you're not going to like Windows 7 and probably be stuck in the past. :|

Yea I can take some screen shots.

Yes you can definitely say that since it's pretty much Vista with a few improvements and a new name. I personally got Vista for free (legally) and I can't see myself bumping up to Windows 7 unless I got it for free.99 or it comes at a very low pricepoint.

He said legally. I got a copy for free too, though I havn't installed it. Courtesy of some MS school partnership for software. Got my Visual Studio '05 free like that too.

i started with windows95...then went to 98..then to me, then to xp. i dont like the idea of having to re-learn an OS every 2 years. seems pointless. i like the "classic" windows look. non-cluttered easy to use easy to navigate. my family has another computer that has vista onit and i cant stand it. shits a cluterfuck. not to mention serveral features that i like in xp or not in vista so i realyl dont want to have to put in the time and effort to learn a new OS. i realise that MS has to make a new OS every so often to stay in business, but afor the select few that really like xp, dont kill the support.

HyperTek

your just not used to it.. I know for some its hard to adjust or make the move, but its worth it. I know money is an issue as to why people dont wanna upgrade, they cant justify spending over $200 bucks on software.

for me vista is very stable and solid, as others said, it doesnt get slowed down over time.. Turn off some of the visual features which slow the interface down. You can even make it look like the oldschool windows if you want. Than you have a trouble free system that will probably never need a reformat over time unlike XP getting bogged down after a while.

Yeah, if you have the ADD Of a 7 year old then Linux is pretty confusing. I can't see how an OS that can run on 10 MB of RAM is "fail" though. Care to explain? :l101:

Welcome to Windows 7 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx)

I'm guessing 4 hours from when I made this post...there should be a link (since WA is on pacific time).

The beta that was released a few days ago has already been leaked. Which means a x64 version is out there.

In case you're wondering why the "experience index" is low...its cause of the HDD (fairly old).

I'm definitely going to get this OS, just hoping the pricing is not horrid.

linux > windows. linux is getting easier to set up by the day. why pay ~$200 for an operating system that is riddled with security holes and crashes when you can get something completely customizable, secure and rarely crashes for free?

Pank

Why use an operating system that cant run 99.99% of the most popular/useful applications?

and dont give me that emulation environment shit, emulating a windows environment to run photoshop is retarded when you can just click "photoshop" in the quicklaunch.
GIMP sucks, so dont even try that.

on the server, linux/unix is king. On the desktop, its useless

I've been using Windows machines all my life, and i think i've gotten ONE virus, with 6 month+ uptimes. Mac users are the same way.

im having a little problem installing the new OS. any help would be great.

i have downloaded both 32 and 64 bit. burned both as iso images.(separate dvd-r's ofcourse) so when i try to boot from dvd it takes me to a blue screen with only the mouse showing and just stays there.

-it is not locked up because the mouse is still moving.
-this is occuring with both versions.
-i have set my computer to stock settings and tried it as well as my overclocked settings and it still doesnt work.

it's windows 7, granted I do tech support for a living... you're asking for help on an operating system's beta that was just made public 24 hours ago... Nobody is going to have a good answer for you. My best bet is to see if you have a ps/2 keyboard available instead of a usb keyboard. You may be able to get away with a mouse but the keyboard may be whats holding you up... the install may not continue if it doesn't detect a keyboard.

I dunno if they started to fix this with newer os' but i run windows xp64 on my machine and I need to use a ps2 mouse and keyboard to navigate in the install program.
