Damn, I'm surprised there wasn't a thread about this movie.

If any of you haven't seen this movie yet, and go to a packed theater for Benjamin Button, Valkyrie, etc, I totally recommend this movie. As much as I did enjoy watching The Wrestler, and Slumdog Millionaire (the last two films I saw in theaters, before was the god awfully disappointing Quantum of Solace), I will say after I watched Gran Torino I was fully satisfied.

It's fucking hilarious at times, you'll understand when you watch it.

My only complaints was the male Asian lead, his acting was stiff and seemed forced, but when you're a first timer on screen with Eastwood, I'm sure it can be a bit tuff.

Great parts: the cheap Asian gang, Eastwood's cheap family, and the horrible, totally wrong shit that Eastwood says (pretty much 3/4 of his lines).

yeah that movie was funny as hell, but of course it wasnt supposed to be,

As for the actors, this is a first time for the majority of those asian actors.

Id SMASH toads sister.

Eastwood's acting was pretty much the whole reason to see this film. Overall it was a good movie. had some good laughs with the way Eastwood played a bitter old man. I think it's one of Eastwood's better acting roles, albeit not one of his best directed films. Pales into comparison with Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby. It seems to be shot very simply, and the plot felt a bit too melodramatic. Felt more like an entertaining 'feel good' movie, than a powerful drama.

I definitely need to see Slumdog & The Wrestler. Supposedly two acclaimed films made by good directors who are trying a totally different approach for the first time.

I just downloded it(or any other movie that you would ever want to see. Refere to my psp thread that was locked out because of my link to free downloads, aslo in off topic), I thought it was pretty good. Glad I did not pay for it, but it was entertaining.

The plot was pretty good and it was told well, all the actors sucked with the exception of Eastwood.

Slumdog is pretty good, Danny Boyle I feel is pretty much a director that can adapt himself to almost any genre and give it a certain touch that is his own. 28 Days Later is still my favorite of his, haven't seen Sunshine yet.

The Wrestler is excellent, you won't come out of it feeling great, and it is a drainer (the last match was hard to watch for me), but the acting is great, Mickey Rourke deserves the praise he is getting for the role. Darren Aronofsky shot the film like a documentary, you feel like a fly on the wall during this guy's life. I was disappointed by The Fountain and didn't care much for Pi, but Requiem was nuts. I hope he doesn't continue this trend of odd number movies that suck (just my opinion) and even ones that are good. :)

I don't know why, but I thought this was a great movie.

Sure the acting was a bit sub par from some the asian people but whatever. Clint's 77 and still a bad ass. What's not to love?

i did not mean it in a derogatory/racist way. I live in the midwest where Caucasians don't know that Hmong is an ethnicity. I hate having to explain myself to ignorant people cause i'm asian.

I wasn't sure what the Hmong were either before watching this movie, and I'm Chinese myself.
I'd imagine there are lots of different ethnic groups in the Indochina region.
Based on the film, some of the customs are completely unknown to me, such as it being taboo patting a kid on the head (I do that to adults too) .
You can't expect everyone to be fully aware of all groups, esp if you have limited contact with them.

best movie i have seen in a long time. i saw it back in december at archlight in la, it was one of like 4 theaters showing early showings. I think it was better than slum dog because I can not relate to slumdog. but i have to admit a kid jumping into a pool of human feces for an autograph is worth a few golden globes. all in all the acting was better in slum dog, but how many good hmong actors are there? clint was hilarious and very real and the setting reminds me of my hometown of Fresno. That is exactly what it islike there. The main character is even from there. I liked the morals, values and the lessons in it. Plus I think I was the only guy laughing in the theater for the first thirty minutes, until everyone else got comfortable with the racial words. good movie though. A real good tough guy movie in an age of special effects and pussies.

And the white civic is EXACTLY what Fresno is like.

LOVED the movie!!

It's to bad he didn't make those dickless gangbangers eat their own shit while shooting them in the knee caps.

And what's with everyone downloading movies? Is it uncool to go to the theaters and watch a movie there? If you think it's expensive, go on Tuesdays or whatever the cheap day is at your movie theater.

it's easy, it's free, and there's something very cool about watching a movie on your tv that's still in theaters.

that said, my favorite theater in town is playing Gran Torino, so i'll go there when i see it the second time.

this movie was one of the best ive seen in a while, there was never a dull moment with all the "fishfaces" trying their hand at disrupting eastwoods lifestyle. ha. many of the actors seemed to be forcing their lines, it seemed as though they were reading the script as they filmed the movie, but whatever. Eastwood is a BAMF so it makes up for the rest of the cast

I watched it last night.

I liked it better than Benjamin Buddin and Valkyrie.

Huge props to Clint Eastwood for deciding to use Hmong's as the asian focus in this film.

They don't get much recognition. So I was glad that they had some focus on them.

As well as the film was racist and stereotypical but it was conducted in a way that it shouldn't piss people off.

As for the guy who didn't even know where his people were from (Are you kidding me?).

Most Hmong people are from Southeast china and Laos.

Htf do I remember this shit?...

Anyhow...

See the movie.

It's worth the money... or bandwidth...

It like George Carlin said. They're just words. The words themselves are harmless. It's the context they are used in that make them offensive or not.

I just got back from this movie. Not what I was expecting at all. But, in a good way. Damn dog almost brought a tear to my eye... The GT is sexy. Clint Eastwood makes me laugh.

"don't put on one of those gay-ass spoilers". I clapped.
