View Full Version : Cat over heating? Warning light? CEL??

I have an auto 180SX cluster in my car from my SR clip. Blacktop, stock, bolt-ons.

The car started running funny a while back and since then I have been getting this light:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/BoroDrifter/cluster.png

What ever that thing is, it's on and has been since the problem began.

I have no idea what this is. Looks like it is supposed to represent a catalytic converter...but I don't have one? Bad o2 sensor? Is this the CEL as I don't really have a check engine light on my cluster.

Btw that cluster pictured is not mine. Mine has an O/D dummy light in place of the hicas light.

Symptoms: very loud and lots of vibration, low power until boost builds (10 psi). Almost like the timing is off, though I have never moved my CAS.

Tried:
New iridium plugs bkr6ex11
Rewired MAF
Changed MAF 3 times with known working MAFs
Swapped coil packs
Compression @ 150psi (cold) on all four
New manifold and turbo gaskets
new vacuum lines
checked for leaks - none

Note: its 20 ~ 30* F everyday right now. The other day it was 40+ and the car ran a lot better. Quiet, smooth ans responsive. When the temp dropped that night it was back to "normal", but the problems started when it was still warm out and just starting to cool into the 60's every day. :bash:

So any on know what this dummy light is supposed to mean? It used to be intermittent, when the car would act funny the light would be on, then the car would run fine and the light would be off. Now it is on 98% of the time.

Yes, that is a catalytic converter overtemp light.

I'd say the place to start is to check the ECU for codes.

My E5 has no potentiometer or LED...wtfbbq srsly...

I have never seen that in any S13's. What monitors the cat? The se3cond o2 sensor monitors the cat in an OBDII car, what monitors it on an OBDI car?

Then I'd say you need to wire up the consult port and access it that way.

Am I going to have a consult port if I didn't specifically wire one up during the swap? Or does this cross into the 240 chassis/engine harness?

Pretty sure it's in with the chassis harness. I don't have my FSM files on me right now or I'd look it up.

Wow. just wow. That is an exhaust overheat light, true, but US cars do not have that option. How do you figure that by plugging a different cluster in you suddenly have the wiring and probe for it magically installed too?

Find a picture of a US cluster and figure out what light is in that same spot, that's the one that's coming on. You just happen to have a different indicator there now with the new cluster.

As for the CONSULT port, you have to wire it in. 99% of people don't do it because they don't know how. It's only three wires.

Its the same on OBD1 or 2

Actually you can say it's the same for S14s. S13s don't have a secondary O2 sensor.

on an s13 that light is the low washer fluid light.

check your washer fluid or unplug that connector in the fenderwell to the washer fluid tank.

And thats exactly why I didn't think that that light is any good. OBDI cars don't have the second O2. Thats OBDII stuff.

How do you figure that by plugging a different cluster in you suddenly have the wiring and probe for it magically installed too? which is why, if you'll excuse me, I was confused. It just came on randomly one day and happened to coincide with the deterioration of the engines performance. Ex-fucking-scuse me...

Washer fluid light...check. Thanks.

The CONSULT port never is, people don't understand it for some reason.

Green, green/white, and green/black. All three match right up to wiring on the ECU. On DOHC cars the wiring is in the dash plug already.
