There is nothing that records motion well at night.

Is this going to the web(youtube) or DVD?

YouTube: Flip Video Camcorder - Digital Camcorder | Flip Video (http://www.theflip.com/) Going to be compressed anyways. May as well record that way.

DVD: Hard Disk Drive | Sony | SonyStyle USA (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=3555)
HDD cams are much easier to manage your shots cause they are stored as files no-linearly.

The the Semi-Pro/Pro:
Advanced Amateur Camcorders | Sony | SonyStyle USA (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644604897)
Professional Camcorders | Sony | SonyStyle USA (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644590400)

When you start talking video cameras you're only half way there. The other half is good video editing software.

For that I'd suggest learning Premier, which is really easy to learn yet powerful, and also AfterRffects.

premier and after effects are way too much for someone unless they plan to go into this as a profession or hobby. if he plans to get good software he better be buying a canon hl-1.
