Installed PBM coilovers a couple days ago. Right after the install I took the car out for a drive to see how they felt and everything felt great. Took a 30 mile trip on the highway though and the further I got, the louder and louder this knocking noise was from the rear of my Hatch ('89).

All bolts are tight. I took the coilover out, inspected it, and reinstalled it to make sure everything was good but it still makes this knocking noise. It's to the point where I don't want to drive anywhere because it sounds like it can do some damage. Also, it doesn't make too much to make that knocking noise. I can open the hatch and push down on the car and it'll knock softly.

Any ideas? I took a look under the car as a friend pushed down on the car and it didn't seem like any of the rear suspension components were making the noise.

In the picture, I can "feel" the knock whenever I push down/bounce the car a little within that crude red circle. So I think it's something directly under it. Unfortunately, even with the car raised I don't think the area under the red circle is visible (or at least I couldn't see that far into the car).

check to see if the sleeve/bushing on the lower mount is still attached to the bottom bracket.

how low did you drop it
if low it could be your subframe hitting your rear toe rod check that

thanks for the replies guys!

Turns out, on the top of the coilover (the part protruding from the tower) there's 3 pieces:

1. Little head piece attached to an allen wrench that adjusts soft hard

2. Beneath the head piece is something that screws on (don't know the purpose of this thing except for it clicks to tell you you've hit the next "soft" or "hard" setting).

3. The nut that secures the core of coilover?? Anyway this piece was loose. I guess it was shaken loose while I was driving down the 405. I wasn't aware that it had to be tightened out of the box.
