Carbon Fiber Tail Lenses

I was checking ebay for parts for my S14 and I came across these Carbon Fiber Taillights. It looks like they cut the carbon fiber sheets to fit around the lights and then glued it on. I think it looks tuff. What do you guys/gals think? Could it be done easily? Where do you get carbon fibre sheets?

So, does the carbon fibre sticker reduce weight? Does it really matter if it is real carbon fibre or not if it is just a sticker? What if I made a carbon fibre undertray from stickers -- would it work? What if I scraped out all of reflective material in my taillights and replaced it with carbon fibre stickers?

cf sticker runs about $25-$30 a roll, prolly six foot by 3 foot. I used it on my center console to cover up a hole in my dash from the previous owner.

the real carbon fiber isnt a sticker sheet

it's a big piece of rough weave, and you have to put resin over it and let it cure.

it's similar to raw fiberglass.

I gotta dig up the link...theres an online wholesaler that sells everything (resin, fibreglass, kevlar, carbon fiber, mold making stuff)


those tail lights are ricey. I should have thought of making that first... i'd be rich!

So if they made REAL CF taillights with the REAL CF, not the fake stuff, but the REAL stuff would you buy them? Would you buy them if they came from Japan or if the Japanese had them on their car? When you see CF do you automatically say "RICER" OR "GAY"? Why? I'd like to know why everyone razes everyone else about Rice this and Rice that. I mean I won't get into that because we already did, but seriously.

Meh, I think those taillights look nice :o Not everything has to be about performance, looks like a little highlight of the taillights that not many would even notice, atleast its not glow in the dark carbon fibre.

I agree that it looks kinda neat--they'd definitely look better if it was real CF resinated onto the plastic, but this is one of the best fake CFs I've seen. I think those taillights would look decent on a white '95-'96--especially w/ gunmetal rims & Euro headlights.

And like ca18guy said--No, it's not a performance mod--it doesn't make your car lighter or quicker. But these taillights aren't a drastic appearance change--unlike 19" BBS rims (nothing against the rims--just an example of a very noticable, drastic change in appearance) or a huge fart can, or even flames painted down the side of the car. The taillights are somewhat subtle and tasteful.

how does the piece aroudn the ashtray and ebrake come off the console it seems almost seamless and i couldnt fins any screws holding it in on the other side

Ok, I take back what I said earlier. It doesn't make a difference if you use REAL CF or FAKE CF. The fact is that either one would just be the stock lights covered in something. This to me would be "ricey". Not that you are, but you did ask for our opinions. It's still your decision to do it or not. I think it would be easy to do if you took your time and did it right the first time.

yea id concur with you about making you car look fast.. how would you define making a car look fast?.. i just want to make my car look better... theres never going to be a right answer for this anyway.. so oh well..

The reason I posted this is because I wanted your opinion on it. I NEVER said I was going to buy it, nor did I ever say I was going to buy CF stickers. If you remember, it was never me that said I wanted CF stickers, heck I didn't even know what they were! So, this heated battle about rice is so stupid.

It doesn't make your car go faster no, I know. It doesn't make your car lighter, I know.
It's strictly cosmetic.

Some of you guys actually have too much to say sometimes. It's like you dictate style and preference, and everyone has to be hip or they are not.

Nobody should dictate style. Style is your own preference and it speaks about how you customize your car. What does a spoiler do? Wether it be fiberglass or CF it still is cosmetic. So in all, I think we need to just respect what other users have to say, and everyone needs to read what was the VERY FIRST QUESTION before jumping in.

Man, people on here have a complex about being "ricey" in the same way a 7th grader has a complex about having a small penis. I think it looks good, and actually I would not mind doing it to my car. Is my car rice? NO Do I like cheep mods that are realitively original and look good, yes. All these guys that go on and on about rice this and rice that, basically have never even bothered taking their cars to a track, so they cannot brag about making their cars faster, and cannot drift, as hard as they may try to convince you they do. Does this make THEM ricers? By their definition, yes. Being rice is reserved for the people that put GTR emblems with giant APC stickers on their cars. Trying to make your car look better is not "rice", so stop trying to make it sound that way.

I guess we are at a point here where a sticker that is designed to resemble a go fast part (actual carbon fiber) is an appearance mod. This is the same logic that would allow a NAWS switch, as an appearance mod, even if no actual NAWS was present. The same logic that allows spoilers that run in dirty air and/or create no downforce.

If it tries to resemble go fast parts, but offers no go fast benefits, it is rice -- or at least it was before the recent "I'm okay, you're okay" belief about the subject.

they aren't that bad. And if it is just a sticker then they did a good job. But looking at how the carbon fiber goes into the locking hole and how it wraps around the lights makes it look kind of real! But i don't know.

I agree--from the pics, it looks to be a very clean job. That couldn't have been very easy or quick to do. I tried to find a flaw in any of those pics, and I didn't find a single crooked-cut or anything.

See, that's what I'm talking about. It's really cool, and it's clean. Usually if you did that yourself it would look like it was a sticker, but it isn't and it well done.

you guys didn't find anything because the pictures aren't close up, it's in low light, and it's just a picture. the one closeup of around the keyhole shows a few bubbles, i would imagine there are other imperfections as well.$265 for those things?? give me a set of springs a brake pads instead.

It barely fills half my screen width. You all need to get 19" monitors for optimum travis'-signature viewing.

It doesn't bother me if a ricer thinks I'm an asshole for running baloony fat tires on steel wheels, no radio, and a stock exhaust.

It shouldn't bother them, then, that I think carbon fiber stickers are silly, and, true to the spirit of all that is long grain and sticky, merely a sad imitation of performance.

Visual mods are cool with me... I'd probably like this taillight mod if it was done in body color or black (in fact I've seen it done that way). The bling-bling carbon look just irks me though.

this thread is too funny. all i have to say is that today, i was behind an s14 in a McD's drive through. it's the first time i've really really stared at the s14 lights. but the taillights were perfectly fine. they flowed with the car. seeing this carbon fiber look alike stuff, on these poor quality pictures, i'll admit, looks like ****. maybe it's because i don't own an s14 and i'm not used to seeing the tallights every time i walk outside. but i don't think it looks all that great. not saying you shouldn't do it, because i don't care really but, you did ask a forum of 5000 people what they thought.
