what is the importance of this sensor. Will affect the way the car runs. And correct me if im wrong but the sensor is located above the tranny. Id like to know cuz i swapped trannys on my car to one that doesnt have the sensor on the bellhouse and im also running auto ecu . i went by a shop and they suggest i go back to manual ecu and get the sensor or the cars not going to run good which it is running pretty funny. Help would be nice

its important to disclose the year of your 240sx. 91-94 has the sensor in the distributor. its outside for 95 n. not sure about 89-90, maybe you are thinking of another sensor. crankcase position sensor is essential.

The Crank pos sensor is only used for misfire detection...the computer only uses the signal from the camshaft sensor for running the engine. I ran for half a year without a crank pos sensor so you should be fine, but the CEL will come on without it.

No. Please for the love of all holy, do not post if you have no clue.
The camshaft position sensor is internal on ALL DOHC distributors, 91-98. You have to have it.
The crankshaft position sensor is only found on 95-98s, located on top of the bellhousing, and is only used for diagnosing misfire. It is NOT needed for engine operation.

I have a crankshaft position sensor in my 1993, for goodness sakes. Grow a brain.

go check again,
go grab the FSM
its for diagnostic purposes only.
unless your engine/harness/ECU is from a 95+ you pulled that out of your ass.

Rock auto etc sells a crankshaft sensor for the 91-93. Another part of the fsm explains that the crankshaft sensor is an integral part of the distributor and is essential.
This is from the factory service manual:

Its on the BELL HOUSING
The FSM must have been a type-o, thats a camshaft position sensor

Even if the sensor in the S13 KA distributor is a crankshaft position sensor, he certainly would not be asking if the engine would run without hooking up the distributor. Based on the information in the first post, it's clear that it's an S14.

The car will run fine. People have been swapping in s13 trannys into s14 KAs forever, CPS sensor only monitors, the ECM will not adjust timing/AF ratios based off its readings.
It will throw a CEL if you dont have the sensor connected, im sure a resistor can take care of it.

All s14s have OBD 2 located under the dash on the passenger side closest to the radio( behind )

So you bumped a 5 yr old thread to spout out an incorrect info? NOT ALL S14s are OBD2. 95s are OBD 1, 96 is the cutoff year but still depends on the manufacturing month. You're talking about a consult plug being under the dash.

Just some info for who actually try to solve problems by searching through threads. They both have crank sensors on the bellhousing. S13 is called crank angle and S14 is called crank position. Same sensor doing the same job.
