ignition lock cylinder wire?

So I just popped in a new ILC in my 89 and found the new one to have an extra 2wire harness with clip.
This is the first ILC Ive replaced on a 240sx so I wasnt sure if I was missing something, but I figured its a wire hook-up for an alternative car that uses the same part.
Its not a huge deal since it didnt effect the install or operation.
Im just wondering what its for.

There are two 2-pin harnesses for the ignition switch:

E106 - key lock solenoid. When you supply current to this harness, it locks the key in the ignition switch. It's used on auto cars so you can't take the key out in R, N, or D1/2/3/4.

E107 - key switch. This one detects if the key is still in the ignition switch and reminds you when you open the door by sounding the chime.

The brown one is E106 and is not needed on manual cars.

See for yourself. From the FSM. Note that if you use aftermarket ignition switches the wires may be different colour but the harness should be the same shape. Look at the wires on the corresponding harness on the body harness side to be sure.

That's for removing the steering column lock when the key is not turned to ACC or ON. Not related to his original question.

the title is misleading. the tutorial covers complete disassembly and somewhere it does mention that its a sensor for the door chime.

i'm agreeing with you. the wiring diagrams give the harness wire colours. the wire colours at the individual parts are always different from harness wire.

I took apart the other end of the wire with white connector and grey foam. it slides onto the lock assembly.

I knew it but I just checked to be sure. My car is manual. I don't even have E106 on my car. It's the small connector that is circled in the different pictures.

I have E107, which is the key lock switch. I measured continuity between the two pins, and there is continuity when the key is in and no continuity when the key is out.


So we have concensus from at least the two of us. The OP's question is the E106 key lock solenoid harness. It's used on auto and not needed.

oh oh, I took apart the the wire with the brown connector. it has electromagnet that controls a piston. its definitely a solenoid. i assume the one with with white connector sends signal to chime when piston is in or out by key being put in. I'm agreeing with your fsm picture now. I'm agreeing with you now, i think.

To clarify, I'm saying that the wire the OP circled is connected to is a solenoid that controls a latch. I dont think it sends any signal.
