I just got back from the track and I had to tow my car home ,I was at the track doing donuts and it turn off and didnt want to turn on no more .when i got to my house it turned on and idles fine but when I rev it there's a loud knocking sound like something got loose from inside the valve cover <metal hitting each other), the guys from the track said it could be a rod knock but how can I be sure of this and if this is the problem how much would it be to fix this

Leak down or compression testing... Either way you have to take it apart....

Cost, rebuild the entire motor. $1000 for machine work and assembly.... If you go stock parts new rebuild probably $1000 if done right. So $2000 - 2500 or so, pending what you wanna replace. Timing belts, water pump, oil pumps... stuff like that...

whats the worse it can be , if is nothing serious what do u think it could be cause I don't think it's nothing that serious to cause to rebuild the engine cause the car it's turning on the it just when I rev it that I hear this noise

Its about "right".... He wouldn't know really until he tore it apart.... I would set aside 2 grand just in case.... Machine work, boring stuff like that...

it fucking sucks dude why does this happens what are the reasons for this to happen

When you do donuts your oil sloshes to one side of the oil pan, when it sloshes away from your oil pickup you will starve the motor for oil and damage it.

Shit I diddnt know this , this was my first sr and I fucked up in less than 3 month ,what's the process of changing the rods ,should I put aftermarket ones what else can I upgrade while the motor it's out
What I have right now is
Tomei head gasket
New oil and water pump
Nismo thermostat
Arp studs and bolts

D14
11-23-2008, 10:16 PM
Well for starters, get a higher capacity oil pan with better baffles...

slider2828
11-23-2008, 10:18 PM
That is not just SR's its all cars... The aren't made to do donuts and drift all days, hence that is why Greddy Oil Pans have baffles to keep the oil in the pick up area?...

Don't buy anything until its taken apart. If you are on a budget then that is the best way. If not

Rods, Pistons, Vavle Springs, Valve Seals, Valves, Valve Guides, Valve retainers.... Clevite Rod Bearings, a shit load of machine work. Like port polishing on the head, hot tanked and cut, knife edge and balancing the crank,

That is about a 6000 Engine.... You pick your poinson

I seem guy doing donuts longer than me and they don't fuched up their cars , what can I do to prevent this to happen again after I rebuild my engine . Thank guys

You want donuts? Dry $ump.

Greddy oil pan.... That will make it pretty safe.... Everyone's motor is different.... that is about it

imo, luck
on my ka i did donuts all day no problems
on the s14 when i first got it, did lots of donuts
got lucky
some people do a few and pop!

slightly overfill the oil maybe?

just luck of the draw. for all youknow your used engines oil pump wasnt up the the challenge? who knows.

engine rrebuild. expect about 3k. at least.
that should cover it
do things slowly
get the bottom end fixed up first.
go from there. thats where most of your money will go.
stock rebuild IS cheapest
but in actuallity, aftermarket (CP Pistons) arent that much over stock, maybe couple hundred at MOST.
make more power, with less boost. mine i went (s14 sr also), 9:1 .002 overbore. room to go bigger and 8:5.1 meh..9:1 is great. bearings went stock. and rods are stock, cranked got cleaned up. greddy pan and new oil pump and headgasket
didnt cost that much really.

find a good shop to do the work.

yeah !,I don't know if u know spencer, he is gonna do my rebuilt he has his shop on warner and main on Santa ana .he has worked on my car before and done a great job he told me he was gonna charge me 1000 to fix the rods but he also told me it could be a bit more if I had fucked up sething else in the head . I hope not, right now I don't have the money to do it, u know Christmas time maybe I'll have the money at the beginning of next year, I'm so angry rght now I shouldnt push my car that much but shit happens

If he is thinking about using the old components and just replacing the rods, I would pass.... Just get a fresh engine rebuild, cause the labor is all the same, its just the parts that cost you more money.

Do your research about engine builds and do it right. It sucks that your engine bit the dust, but now you can build something better.

xplicit240

You have to remember that your SR is just as beat up as a KA engine. So if you didnt do a rebuild before dropping it in, why wouldn't it eventually blow?

Alot of these new guys to the scene hear the urban myths about, 30K engines from Japan, and SR engines being better than KA's. But the reality is that the Japanese engines have a little less miles, but almost all city driving miles. The motors are just as old as the KA and so they are just as likely to go.

I fucked my KA by not changing the oil and doing auto cross after auto cross. Keep your oil changed after every event and this will save you alot of headache.
I had mt KA rebuilt by a shop for $2000. Included was a new radiator, crank and some other stuff. As well as a 3 year warrenty that my engine is still under.

After your rebuild, just do the regualer mantainence after the break in, and you probably will never have another problem with the car if the engine runs in stock form. (not over boosting it.)

Sideways_blksr20
11-24-2008, 04:09 PM
I didn't put it on my car I bought with the sr in it

!Zar!
11-24-2008, 05:20 PM
Did you check your oil level before the event?

What's your oil level now?

Aside from that, props for taking your car to the track to beat on it.

I am in the process of rebuilding an sr20det, i bought it with a rod knock, complete motor swap for 500 bucks, i have about 1400 in parts, new oil pump, new rings, new rod bearings, new main bearings, Nissan oem gasket set, water pump, nismo thermostat, tomei RAS, steel braided turbo lines, timing chain component set, arp head studs, im sure i am missing some parts, also the maching work, my crank had to be ground .25 over main, and .75 over rod(spun a rod bearing #3 cylinder guy i bought from must have driving a while like that) that was about 130.00 bucks, and the block was tanked and honed and surfaced, along with the rods honed(again spun bearing on 3 messed the journal up) that was about 165.00 bucks, so $300 + $1400 = $1700 in parts and BOTTOM END WORK ALONE, this is a all oem rebuild, i plan on getting the head done by the end of the month, cleaned, valve job, and surfaced, guy quoted me 2-300 for that, so not to bad, and this is me putting everything together myself no mechanic doing it...

Sorry that your engine got a rod knock it sucks, but while you have the engine apart you might as well rebuild it right the first time and not cheap out on it and nuke the motor again... just my $.02 :)

Edit: Also, cheapest route to go would be buy a short block, but again your unsure of mileage, condition and such, best of luck...

I didn't put it on my car I bought with the sr in it

LOL, its the same thing. Its an old ass engine. If you dont rebuild a SR/RB/1JZ/KA, thats fine. Run em till they break. just expect at some point to have to rebuild.

Like I said above, once the rebuild is done, your gonna be stoked. As long as you maintain it, you wont have to worry about it crapping out.
(plus it will probably pull harder when rebuilt, mine did.) :snoop:

Not familiar with grip force.

You should read up more on clutches. There are a ton of threads about which clutches people like. I lean towards ACT or Exedy

I get that hesistation too... Try cleaning your mafs... That is what I am going to try... Remember to properly break in the motor and did you increase boost? If so did you get new injectors and a tune? That would be a big reason...

It could be also a very small vac leak
