When you guys do this, do you ever refill the oil filter it self? I tend to only lube up the gasket and install w/o filling up the filter with oil.

However durring initial startup it takes a good 5 seconds for the oil light to go off when I swap filters, Im getting concerned about my bearings.

Is this how you guys change your filters? Usually in my case most of the oil spills out of the filter anyway while im trying to thread it onto the block

No oil in the filter.

My light never turns on.

Every car's oil I've changed never comes on.

not even durring initial startup for a few seconds?

Nope, never.

My oil light immediately turns off right after start up.

If it won't spill on the floor I would put some oil in the new filter, but it varies on different cars you know (IIRC I think the Sentra I worked on recently threads in horizontally) and if you have to clean the shit from the floor.
^yeah I never see the light go on either^

I've never had the oil light come on after an oil change.

I'll lube the o-ring and if I'm feeling kinky I'll pour some oil in the filter.

oh snap!

Well it only came on durring start up for 3 seconds +/- 0.5 seconds then I shut it down right away.

That's not a huge deal - as long as the light goes off. It may be a harbinger of other bad things, but it's not going to cause any probs.

With my oil setup (SR + relocation + cooler) I filled it all before install, but don't worry about refilling anything after an oil change (beyond the typical pour new oil into the valve cover). Oil pressure right after startup is typically high (60psi or so) because the oil is cold.

I always fill the oil filter with oil at least half way just to be safe. Its more of a habit now more than anything.

yea i had about a 1/2 qt over, so the easiest way to drain on the fly was swapping filters, couldve done it at a stop light. But then the light stayed on for a few extra seconds which cost me an extra pack of camel lights

Do you have an oil relocation kit?

your oil pump primes the motor in the time it takes to actually "run". not to mention your bearings and most of the motor is going to still be well lubed as draining the oil removes the standing oil in the pan and what ever drains down...

if the light is staying on that long i would start to suspect a failing oil pump.

no filling of filter required

light oil around the ring and start her right up.

this is what I did, however all 3 of my cars would always have the oil light on for 3 seconds or so when I would then start it up, so I thought it was normal; oil filling the filter

Now im a bit worried.

Good to know, I always fill the oil filter, making a fucking mess squeezing my arm under the intake and trying to find the hidden threads...

this is true, and this time I had no oil on hand, except for some mobil1, which will never touch my car, except for lubing the oil filter gasket

im pretty sure if that light is on it means you have LESS than 6psi of oil pressure...

check your oil pan for dents. perhaps a restriction in the oil sump could be the culprit causing the low oil pressure during startup. I would take your oil pan off and look at the sump/pickup.

i have never once filled my oil filter. Just slick up the o ring and slide it on.. should be fine. As far as the light goes, you should be fine too.
