View Full Version : You should do a Silvia Conversion!

Anyone else get annoyed with this comment about their car? It doesn't matter if you own a S13 Fastback, Coupe, S14 Zenki or Kouki it's always:

"You should do a Silvia Conversion"

or

"You should get the Silvia bumpers or whatever for it"

Yeah lets make a S13 hatch into a "Silvia." Whatever that means.

Also why is it the Kouki S14 is automaticly to alot of idiots a Silvia or a car with the "Silvia conversion." Why isn't the Zenki S14 a "Silvia" to people or a car with a "Silvia conversion."

what the heck is suposed to be a "Silvia conversion." sorry I'm just ranting and bored here at work. Cause the Silvia name doesn't signify anything! it's the J's, Q's and K's. Silvia is just a name. Also you can't forget the:

"You should get a Sylvia body kit for your car that would be tYtE DoGg!" ugh

Yes.

Cuz they're so rare that ppl don't know they were made here. It shows that those people are rambling about cars that they know nothing about.

Cause the Silvia name doesn't signify anything! it's the J's, Q's and K's. Silvia is just a name.
Eh? Not sure what you mean there. I'd say Silvia = JDM S13 coupe and S14 (and S12 and etc.).

It's kinda funny that some of those people who talk about Silvia conversions already call our USDM cars Silvias.

Hehe....i was thinking this a litlle while back when i frst got the car last year. Everytime someone came up to me to talk about the car....the "So, u gonna do the Silvia Front end conversion?" I just laughed......I knew they were talking about the S15 front end. Then i say "The S15?"....they are like "huh?? no the silvia". I dont want to be an ass so i just say ok and leave it at that.

Whatever....my car is no where near true silvia standards, but how come a lota people think that the only "Silvia" is the S15???

I was surprised the other day a the hobby shop on base working on something under the hood. The typical random import dude there came over and started talking to me about my car and he actually knew that I didn't have a sr20 (though he didn't know the actual engine name) It surprised me cause I ussually have to go over how I don't have a "US motor" and I don't have the all mighty SR either.

i got that when i went to In n Out and everytime (everytime) i go get new tires (um...). i do drift but i dont like to talk about it...it only brings more stupid questions (like SR, silvia faces..etc etc)

Its worse for the KA-T owners. People dont seem to get that you can turbo the KA. Every few days the same person or a friend of theirs would be like, "so you got a SR20?" "No, its a KA24 factory motor with a turbo" then they would just look at you confused as hell and wont speak another word.

Saying I've heard that are anoying...

"Why dont you take off the 240sx emblem off and put a Silvia emblem on your car"

"Hey the guy with the Silvia is here"

What's up nitekid- u still want my wheels??j/k:D
Yeah, my friend used to have a 240SX and people would constantly come up to him asking if he's got SR20 under the hood. Some kids sometimes ask me if my car is twinturbo or not and I just say "NO it's NA" because I don't want to deal with those punk kids.:D

The worst was when someone asked me what kind of turbo I was gonna use... then suggested: "You should get a Bomex turbo for your car."

You know those stickers they have of the cartoon kid [pee]ing on other car brand logos and stuff?? I wonder if I could customize one to replace the logo with "SR20DET", not because I don't like the engine, but to [pee] off the newbies....

Edit: I can't believe they sensor the alternate word for pee.

Do whatever you want...who cares what ppl think :p ...If I were in your situation I'd do it because I like how it looks...personal opinion is what matters most. Same goes for rims, bodykit, spoiler, whatever...

But in the end it will probably be cheaper to find the front end parts from someone who already did the swap or maybe even from the junkyard.

that's nothin......

the last time i was at the track i go walking up to my car and some 13yr old is looking at it.......so i smile at him and get in. he runs around to my window and asks

kid: is this a skyline, i can't tell, there aren't any badges on it
me: nope, it's just a 240
kid: oh really, my dad said it was. you must be the fastest person out there, they have the same engine right?
me: well, it's just a 240, and i'm far from the fastest
kid: oh...........ok.......bye

so i pull up to false grid, not mad or anything, cause he was 13 or so.......when the kid and his dad come up to me....

dad: nice car ya got here, i got the 89 junker over there
me: oh that's cool, bit of a project huh?
dad: yeah, me and my buddy are thinkin about puttin a skyline engine in it
me: really?
dad: yeah, got the car for $500, anyway good luck, i gotta go work

at this point dad's buddy comes up to me

buddy: nice skyline
me: it's not a skyline, it's a 240
buddy: well they're basically the same
me: not really, they're way different
buddy: well they're based off the same chassis
me: no, different engine, chassis, way different cars

at this point the guy stares at me for a while.........and i just look forward and flip down my helmet visor.....

after i pull in and park (way far away from these dingbats) two other kids walk up to the car, and of course, i get the usual.......

kids: "wow, nice silvia..........we've been watching you drive......you're the fastest guy out there"
me: actually, i'm about 2 seconds slower than the leader, and that's just in my class
kids: well yeah, but there's vipers out there and $hit
me: yeah, they are about 20 seconds faster

just somethin you gotta put up with when you own these things

Kids in a Jeep at a gas station peeping to the rear of my car trying to see what car compnay logo was on it and they see the little tiny one in back. (Only nissan logo on the car other then stearing wheel)

"Is that a Skyline GTR!?"

"(Me being a smart ass) nah it's a Skyline GTS Single Turbo Rear wheel drive. RB25)"

"Oh man that's still tight as hell!"

Then of course in the end I told them what it really and they of course said something like:

"Oh you mean it's really a Silvia then?"

Ugh I got tired of the dumbasses and then finally left the gas station.

A strawberry face is the S15 front end. "one five" in Japanese is the same as "strawberry" or "ichigo".

S15 = 15 = 1-5 = ichi go = ichigo = japanese for strawberry. I either spelled something wrong there or screwed it up somehow, but that's the jist of it. Anyone that tells you to do a strawberry face conversion probably read an import mag with a 240sx with an S15 front end.... or (shudder) some other car with an S15 front end.

This gas station attendent that plays Gran Turismo a lot looked at my S13, and started making comments "Wow what is that?"

I said "It's a Nissan 240sx, if you play GT you may be familiar with the 180sx, which is the same car with a different engine."
He goes "Nah, the 180sx is much bigger"

Then he goes on to tell me how he likes the Mitsubishi 3000gt in the game (which was the TRD 3000GT)... I tried explaining the difference, and he was stumped "Nah, the 3000gt is mitsubishi"

Some guy asked if my car was a Camaro once. I said, yes, yes it is.

But, yeah... the Skyline thing is REALLY annoying, apparantly there are a LOT of people out there that think 240sx is the USDM version of a Skyline lol. . Hell, I've seen evidence enough on eBay...

LOL--I was thinking the same thing, as well as being the only person to admit someone mistook my car for a Honda! hehe

I've had my S12 hatch confused with an AE86 before.......

As far as the Silvia name goes, it's really the name of the platform, so in that sense a 240SX is just a USDM S13 Silvia. It just happens to have a different engine for this market, and both the hatch and the coupe use the 180SX (also technically a Silvia) front clip.

I have described my car to people who weren't familiar with it as "S12 Silvia platform, VG30E engine" That's another platform/engine combination that's unique to the USDM. Elsewhere, S12's only got CA18ET's (also offered in the US) or FJ20ET's.

You'll get a lot of opinions on this from the S12 faithful...

The VG30E is easily the 'no-brainer' model. It came with all the best parts, stock, and it's probably the most reliable variant. It's also very heavy, though, around 2900lb.

The CA18ET model is my personal favorite from a driver's perspective, being about the same weight and power as an S13. They're flaky, though... the CA18ET has a lot of problems.

The CA20E cars are very light, but their mediocre power output is no picnic either way. They have no rear swaybar and only a token front swaybar, tons of body roll.

If I did the S12 thing again... I'd find a clean CA18ET shell with a dead engine (not too uncommon) and drop in a KA24.

Although I do agree with a lot of these annoyances, the "What motor do you have?" question is pretty damn legit, given that it's not coming from some riceboy who will suggest you swap in a B18C.

Anyways, I was evesdropping on a group of ricers at school (Rutgers) on Tuesday... It's amazing how FRICKIN DUMB some people are..

"YO, that new 350Z is mad tizzite!!"
"Word, I heard its got a 5 cylinder"
"word?"
"Not even a four cylinder!!" (OMG! Who would've thunk it?!)

They then proceeded to look for bodykits online while arguing about the biggest blingin rim size you can fit on some Acura

vg30s12
02-06-2003, 11:05 AM
CA18ET's are decently reliable as far as I know, and very tuneable. My personal favorite is of course the VG30E. True, it's a couple hundred pounds heavier, but the torque is great. It's really like a little muscle car, it's got a larger engine than it really needs. It's a blast. For drifting I'd go with a Turbo.

If you really want to get an answer to this question from a variety of sources (with the most thorough combined knowledge of S12's anywhere) you should check out the Forum at Club S12 at www.club-s12.org. Several members have custom-manufactured parts or how-to's available for S12's, including cone filter adapters for all engines, front and rear strut tower bars, various Z31 parts swaps, engine swaps, custom engines, and more. This Club was just started in spring of 2002, it grew out of the old Classic 200SX Yahoo! mailing list, and has grown by leaps and bounds, there are now over 275 registered S12 nuts!

I have come to the conclusion that most of the people in the world are retards.

That's a very good assumption to make, especially when you are on the road. I've always tried to drive as if every other car on the road was driven by a drunken chimpanzee, who is always going to do the stupidest thing he can possibly do. It's kept me out of trouble so far.

That's pretty funny, because I do the exact same thing.

I've always got the "drift" question from the drive through guy everytime I pull into the local McDonalds. Before I did my kouki conversion people thought I drove an MX-6, and as always, the whole SR question. I usually just say to them...nah that's ok, I want to be unique and keep my KA. It seems that everybody and their mom wants to buy an SR, even if they don't drive a 240.

They're even putting them in Civics now, if you believe what you hear in The Fast and the Furious.

I guess I'm somewhat lucky to be in OK--where pretty-much nobody knows about Skylines, Silvias, or SR's. Tulsa's just over-loaded w/ body-kitted, windshield-wiper-squirter-lighted, valve-stem-cover-lighted, 3-spoke-rimmed, fart-canned, flame-painted, single-windshield-wipered, slammed-to-the-ground, blue-headlight-bulbed, Blitz-Sparco-APC-APC-APC-APC-Apex-i-Mugen-stickered, altezza-lighted, "drifting-accidented" Hondas with Japanese-Chinese-Philpino-Russian-Spanish lettering all over them.

I don't think the makers of the Fast and the Furious realized they were making the video bible for Ricers. :D

And yeah, someone is putting a sr20 in a civic. Its the bluebird engine from what I recall. FWD.

I had the same case as you.....one time my friend actually walked up to a green MX-6 parked around mine and literally thought it was my car.

I think WeST originally wanted this to be a 300ZX and Silvia (240SX) board, hence the name Zilvia. On the zilvia.net homepage, it says "board for the 300ZX and 240SX). Also, the logo says "240SX - 180SX - Silvia - Sil-Eighty - Z32" below "Zilvia.net"

Johnny Tran was ahead of his time. Believe it.

People always mistake my car for a Prelude SH from the back. Ah well.

And about the SR question, be glad nobody asks if you're tossing a b16 or something in there :D

You know, it really does not surprise me the level of uneducated people out there on the streets that either don't know about our cars or only know stuff that they have SEEN in Stupid Street, Import Tuner or any of the other magazines. These magazines do not even get the information 100% acurate in most cases.

Our cars have been commonly mistaken for: Ford Probes, Mazda MX-6's, Honda Prelude's, Honda Accord Coupes, Skylines, etc. (I am sure other people out there can name more).

Walk down the street and watch for somebody doing the absolute stoopidest thing you can imagine. Now realize that 50% of the world's population is STUPIDER than that.

These people out there should be educated, but sometimes you just got to be like "Uh huh, sure, whatever you say" and go on your way. Silvia conversions for S14's really mean nothing if you were going to put a JDM Silvia front end on the car from another S14. Now if you wanted to put an S13 or S15 front end on the car, then that might mean something. I love my car and would not bother doing something like that now (However the S13 front end on an S14 is a rather interesting looking swap). The only thing worthwhile to me to do to the front would be to put on the German (Euro Spec) headlights (I mean besides doing bodykits).

Ford probe looks like the 240sx hatchback(180sx), and the mx-6 looks like the s14. I HATE THAT, I HATE THOSE CARS, theyre so friggin ugly. arrrrrg. especially when fools fix up their probs and mx6's. i bet they wish they had 240sx'

Man i dont get the big deal with the front end conversion. All i ever hear is, "man you got pop-up headlights that kicks ass"
