View Full Version : Need ignition help...don't let co-workers mess with your car

Yesterday I left my foglights on all day accidently and drained my battery -

I realized this as I was going to lunch, so rather than leave, I just worked through, and as two of my co-workers were leaving I asked them to jump off my car on the way out and toss back my keys..

So they brought my keys back and said it charged..and would crank but not turn over...so I went to check it out when I left work and it was charged, but the gauge cluster didn't work along with the power windows. I checked the alternator fuse and surely, it was blown. Replaced it...still won't turn over.

So beating myself about the head with the problem today at work..I'm not sure what to look for first. And then one of them told me that they accidently had the jumper cables reversed on my battery for a few seconds before realizing it. Cool...
My problems:

I assume this is why the alternator fuse blew? correct?

What else might this have messed up that would cause the car not to crank?

I pulled the code off the blinking red light on the ECU - it came back as 21 (Ignition Signal)
What do I need to check now? Ignitor (I have an SR)? The Ignition Switch fuse is fine, and the CAS is plugged in and has no broken wires.

Any help?

Reversing the voltage could screw up electrical components such as comparators, capacitors, etc

Not that this could have anything to do with your problem because I am not sure if the ECU utilizes those components.

Try googling "reversed cables when jumping car" or something

everything I've been reading seems to point to the ignitor. I don't think anyone around here has an SR ignitor so I may have to hit up the junkyard on Friday and see if I can find a Q45 one. Any other suggestions?

Also, since heavy throttle's website is now down, is there somewhere to get a wiring diagram for the q45 ignitor if I go with that?

check for spark by pulling a plug, inserting it into the coil pack, grounding the plug, and cranking the engine look for spark and check all 4

I did this before..... Its going to be a nightmare....

I would check every single fuse there is... cause others might be blown... CHeck for fried grounds.... Check your ecu for diag light....

I did man, and it pulled code 21, like I said.

Sileighty - One of the guys from enjuku told me to pull one of the coil packs and stick in a long wire, holding the other end with a rag and hold it fairly close to a chassis ground..if they're good I should see them spark..but I havent been able to find anyone that will crank my car while I test this out...my friends rock..

also, sileighty, thanks for the diagram, I knew I'd seen it before. The colors on there are those the colors from the SR wiring or the pigtails on the Q45 ignitor? Also..the ground, is that wire already grounded or do I need to run a seperate ground, like on a z32 maf?

That's work too, or like I said stick the plug in the coil pack get a piece of wire with alligator clips on both sides, clip one to the plug and one to a ground and place the plug close to the front windsheild and crank it, you should be able to see it from there it should be pretty noticeable also.

not completely sure, Ive never had to use this diagrahm or wire up a Q45, I just kept them incase I ever needed it.

Cool, thanks. I'm going to try that tomorrow morning when I get to work.

for the problems inside the car like guages and windoes check your timing control unit it will be this little white box behind the fuse panel
