I am trying to teach myself changing my own oil and now i wanna begin by buying my own equipment. What is the best brand out there were you can depend your safety not fearing the car falling on you because of cheap jack/jack stands? they come in different names by different companies. Who would you trust?

i use, BIG RED jack and jack stands... car has been MONTHS on the stands no problem and the jack is kinda crappy but it does its job... if you have a LOW car, get a jack that is really low also so itll make it easier on you...

but any brand you see at autoparts should work...

i got mine on a special they had once a few years ago, it was a box with 2 jackstand, a jack and the bed with wheels thingie hahaha...

stands are pretty much stands as long as long as you don't get gigantic ones meant for a diesel truck.

I got my dad the Craftsman branded version of this jack last christmas and it's a piece of shit http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/photos/40100-40199/40105.gif I'd recommend staying away from any that look like it even if it's a different color.. I've seen this exact jack get sold under a few different brand names. They're like the pump-jack version of shitty chinese auto parts. In less than a year it's failed, you can spin the handle all you want but the relief valve doesn't get tighter... also whatever held the handle 'up' when not in use went bad suddenly and when I let go of the handle one day it fell and put a dent in the trunk of my dad's '66 Healey & popped out a nice chip of the enamel. It was also a bitch to move around with the steamroller front wheel, and really heavy, and had too much play before pumping actuated the piston. On top of all that you can see how gigantic the handle is and how it doesn't even stand upright in the rest position. It's cause the leverage sucks and as a side effect if you leave the jack under the car the handle is always in your way.

They're most likely all the same garbage. For the price (~$150+) there's got to be something a lot more functional.

^^^Did u take it back to sears or whatever u got it? Cause Craftsman has lifetime warranty.I personally use Craftsman jack stands very sturdy. I also check the box for that good O' American flag cause its way way better than that autozone cheap ass shiat.:mrmeph:

Nah that's my dad's prerogative. Every time I mention their replacement guarantee he's always "meh"

not sure i'd want another one anyway just because of how clumsy it is. and I'm saying "i'd want" as if I'm the one using it most of the time, I don't even live there anymore... maybe i'm just too intolerant. i ought to see about getting it replaced for him, even if it only lasts for another year.

the funny thing, is the jack that we have which still works is another craftsman. It's about as old as I am & it's proven to be 1000X more reliable than the cool looking red one i bought on the assumption of name brand quality last christmas.

I have one of the same "low profile" aluminum jacks. I like how light it is, but its getting kinda rickity from everyday use..i would recommend purchasing a sturdy steel one.

costco sells a nice aluminum jack for a good price. it's light, strong, and if you don't like it costco has a pretty nice return policy.

Craftsman jacks are not lifetime warrantied.. just to let you know they have a 1 year warranty with a reciept.. only HAND TOOLS are lifetime. How do i know, because i work there... and yes.. all the craftsman jacks suck.. dont buy them..

stay away from craftsman jack....I like using Powerbuilt 3ton jack last good for about 1 -2 years then it busted so......harbor freight is the way to go unless you want to spend like 300-500 for a Hein Werner one lol
