View Full Version : Anyone here seen SR20DET swap w/ an automatic?

I am starting an 93 240sx SR20DET swap with automatic transmission tomorrow, and I was just wondering if anyone has seen or done this before. I wanted and found a clip with an automatic. If you have seen this, any times at the drag strip or similar stories? Just wondering what to expect.
The extra 5spd is for sale that came with the clip.
Thanks for helping out a newbie!

Why? Do you just not want to have fun? Whatever floats your boat though, good luck.

I have taken heat for the auto thing for 8 years now, and I haven't budged. I will have lots of fun but I just HATE throwing gears.

hey man, mine is an auto also and I take in sh** all the time about that crap. Now when I got my car i wasn't exactly looking for an automatic. but I got my S14 for $3,000.00 and nothing was wrong with it. So I had to get it. Anyway, if you look at Jerry's page, he bought a silvia transmission for that engine. Now I was told by my friend Kyle (who has a S13 KA-T) that the automatic wouldn't handle the power without a torque converter. So be careful, it would suck to finally get the whole thing in and then mess up the transmission. So man let me know how it goes.

There is a difference in "max" power on sr motors with an auto tranny. For instance, the manual s15 motor has 480cc injectors, while the auto s15 has 370cc injectors.
Basically.. it is true that 300hp is abou the limit on the KA tranny... and Nissan probably knows about a limit on the sr tranny, or I don't think it would come with smaller injectors.
Just some observations.

I really wish importers would get more SR auto trannies/bellhousings for everyone.
Don't listen to those guys that tell you you NEED a 5-speed.
But it's possible-especially since you got the clip.
There are maybe what? 20,000+ S13's in Japan with SR+auto.
It's cool you have an open mind about your project- I wish more guys would consider going SR-auto instead of auto->manual.
Maybe you'll dispel all the rumor and speculation and there will be more demand and importers will get some more. :)
It's not rumor and speculation, it's flat preference. For myself and probably most of the people here, automatics numb the driving experience. The whole point of SR swaps is fun, so why do something we see as VERY UN-FUN like use an automatic?
Now, if you or the original poster prefers the auto, so be it - any good importer should be able to source the engines. Be prepared to wait or possibly pay extra, though. If that's what you want, do it, and don't let anyone tell you it's a bad idea. Nissan themselves bolted SRs to automatics.
Turbocharging the KA might be a better choice with the automatic. Just something to consider. Two reasons - more low to mid range torque and easier transmission replacement. On the chance that you scatter the transmission, you don't want to have to wait another 6 months for an SR automatic when you can find KA automatics in any junkyard.

Okay, we know that someone has proven the extent to which you can take the guts of a KA manual and stuff them into an SR bellhousing. This suggests that you may be able to stick a KA auto into an SR auto bellhousing. This might cut down on the issue of finding a new tranny if year lunch one. (of course if you really "scatter" it, you may well be screwed.
Another SR auto that I recall is down in FL. It was done for (can't remember her name), but was one of the earliest swaps by Unstable Hybrids, iirc. Not a bad idea for a cruiser.
Aside from that, I am wondering even more about AKA's point b/c of the shift points. A KAT builds power low and tends to drop off at peak rpms, while an SR starts slower and boosts off the tach. Given that and an auto's propensity to shift lower, I wonder if that's not a better idea?

Yeah, I'd imagine the internals are probably pretty close... It's not in a manufacturer's best interest to build 19 different transmissions, better to build one transmission and make versions to bolt up to 19 different engines.
But, automatic transmission rebuilding is definitely not a job for most DIYers... For a bolt out/bolt in oh-my-god-how-am-I-gonna-get-to-work-on-Monday deal, swapping whole transmissions is much easier.

Designed to hold 150 hp, can hold 300 hp reliably from what I have seen/heard.

Phase 1 complete.
Swap is finished and VERY clean.
Some of you were talking about a KA auto tranny. I got a clip with an automatic. Are the SR auto and KA auto the same?
Phase 2 starts Monday 2/10
Springs
Struts
Strut Bars
Sway bar kit
Injectors
3" Greddy
Brembo's
SS Lines
18" wheels and tires
Thanks for all the comments about autos
Will post pics soon

Swap was almost flawless...except for the five lug conversion. PAIN IN THE ASS.
I just dynoed today at dyno labs.
My 'stock' 93, automatic SR with Walbro fuel pump and Greddy Intercooler put down 225.0 rwhp and 246.8 torque at 13 psi.
On Sunday, my best time in the 1/8 mile was 9.237 at 77.98mph.
The 1/4 drag strip opens up soon. Anyone with 1/8 times w/ SR's or KAT's?
Injectors, MAF, N-TER Cooler Chiller, and upgraded computer going in over the next month. I will dyno it and run it again after phase 3 of my project. I hope to hit 300 rwhp and middle 8's in the 1/8.
Hope this helps anyone who wondered about automatic transmissions. I will definitely be testing the strength of the auto as well.

which SR? what do you mean by "stock"? full stock? stock boost too?
DuffMan
03-25-2003, 04:43 AM
Yeah stock boost, plus annother 5lbs of boost. :D
Only 225hp, hmm, do you know what gear you were in? I bet that would be more with a locked torque converter. I remember seeing this little afternarket control thing on a maxima that let you lock up the torque converter in any gear, that might improve your times and dyno runs.

Coopmike, send me a e-mail, I am in Atlanta with a SR Auto that I am getting ready to install. Want to know what you found during the install.

I have a redtop SR20.
I was running about 12.5 to 13 boost.
Contact me at

By stock, I mean a stock SR20DET. I have only change the fuel pump, intercooler, and boost.
