Remove the front cover. The bolt is too long to slide out anyway, even if you got to it.

oh, well i dont want to remove it, apparently if you just loosen both the bolts the tensioner will slide back inside, which is what i need to get the idler sprocket realigned with the head.

Okay they're both pretty tight now.. but the tensioner hasn't shot out yet.. It feels like im going to break the bolts, they are so tight in there. So i keep tightening.. or am i missing something?? Does it even matter to have the tensioner out or what? or does the tensioner slide out again when you start the car?

edit: i loosened it all up, and the tensioner shot in.. i got the idler sproket back on and bolted in.. so now im trying to get the tensioner to shoot back out again...

The bolts that secure the tensioner have nothing to do with the tensioner itself, they just hold it to the head. If the tensioner doesn't pop out on it's own you have a problem.

:O
what could be stopping it from shooting out? oh shit.

well.. if loosening the tensioner itself shoots it in.. i mean.. what would make it 'automatically' shoot out again?

bump?

maybe if i just re-loosen the bolts and re-tighten them? or am i wasting my time?

Give up. Buy a new tensioner.

maybe.

There's still hope.
:o.

edit: im still confused though.. what makes the tensioner automatically shoot out then?? i mean.. if loosening the tensioner up would shoot it in.. then what would make the tensioner shoot out again..?

When I replaced mine, it was held back by a pin that kept it back, when I pulled the pin, it sprung forward. They apply tension to the chain with oil pressure. Maybe yours is just stuck. You could try and work it back and forth to see if it loosens up and snaps back.
I HIGHLY suggest removing it and checking it. If it is broke somehow, you will be hosed when you fire up the motor.
