so when i came home from iraq to a beautiful sil80 sitting in my driveway, I didn't think I would break it so soon.
1 drunken stereo install later...and my marine/rv battery is arc welded to my car. "we" connected it backwards. If you saw it, you would understand. The battery uses threaded posts and I-hoops with both positive and negative having red "boots" on the ends. SUCKED :newbie:
so far, replaced :
walbro fuel pump
fuel pump relay
power FC
split-fire coil packs
main alternator fuse
and a handful of other fuses around the car
total so far : $$1900
so my question is...why is this thing is smoking ?...What is this????(PICS) (http://zilvia.net/f/tech-talk/84932-what-pics.html#post765860)
I have a 1990 240sx frame with a 1989 180sx rear end and a 1989 s13 front clip. the motor is from the 180sx and its a redtop sr20det. the motor starts but im weary to drive the car with that little silver box getting so damned hot. seriously, it smokes, and i dont want to do more damage :(
any help is appreciated. or just poke me with a stick, cause I think ive exhausted the internet, and im done !

looks like resistor for auto tranny which harness is it connected? battery harness, chassis harnnes, engine harness?

its connected to the harness that runs to the fuse/relay box (ign coil, egi, egi pump, etc..)
my car is manual. it worked before but now it smokes. car runs (rough..untuned) with it plugged in, but not with it disconnected.

It should not be needed to run your engine.
When I pulled my SR out from my Manual 180SX I had one and pulled it out. my SR is running fine with out it.
when you arced the battery you probably shorted/grounded some wires out. check your harness for melted wires

I thought 180sx meant CA1.8 engine?
Are you gonna get the car tuned localy?? Cause maybe it would be worth it to take it in and have them figure it out since they will be doing the work anyways??

but thing is....it ran correct before i cross lines...and it runs with it plugged in...just gets too hot to touch/melts-wires-around-it hot.
ill check the harness today..thanks man :-/

you probably burnt fusible links and what not.
but yeah, that thing that is smoking is for the AT tranny from the KA motor. just toss it.

its a rear from a 180sx (glass and taillights), suspension and brakes from a 300z, front clip from a 1989 s13, and an sr20det that i'm not actually sure where from.
I'm taking it to Kansas city sometime in the near future, there is nowhere near Salina, ks that i trust to tune it up right.

innovative a/f regulator
apexi power fc

have you tried checking the resistance of it? maybe replace it with an equal resistance resistor. somebody correct me if i'm wrong.

also, for reference, the little silver box is mounted on the backside of the drivers side strut tower ( my car is RHD) between the tower and the fire wall

I have one too, but my car runs if I unplug it. My car is a manual, never auto. Imported complete. I have a Apexi PowerFC.

trace the wire to see where they go to exactly, you said that one side is getting power correct? is it getting power directly from the battery or via a fuse or relay. if so what fuse/relay. i believe i have one somewhere, if i can find it you are more then welcome to it if you pay for shipping.

anyone know here i can get another one of these things ?
EDIT**
Disregard I didnt pay attention to the pic
Ya, my 5spd 180sx came with one. Pretty sure it's the injector resistor. Mine wasn't connected tho. The wires seemed to be cut. I dunno.

Um no this is not a drooping resistor, it only has 2 wires, plus from what the OP said it is likly to be on the battery/tranny harness not engine harness.
drooping resisters are not on stock SR's but they are found on CA's

new info...noticed that my fuel pump doesn't kick on when its unplugged...its loud, and i can normally hear it ( walbro's are like chainsaws in the gas tank)
whiles its connected, it will run, but as soon as you give it gas, it cuts out...no fuel...
...i dunno
susanr34 is awesome though shes contacting the nissan japan side of the world for me :)

probe that sucker while its running, and have someone give it gas. see if the voltage takes a sudden drop before the car dies.
