heh... someone in Hawaii drifts one of those.
I'm personally surprised at the US drift scene's reluctance to use all the different cars we have at our disposal. Obviously it makes things easier from a tuning perspective to use the same cars they use in Japan... but still.
If I was going to make a drift car, I'd build up a 5.0L Mustang.

No... no need for that much power. And spending money on the engine is fruitless when it's the chassis that needs the most help.
A stock '87-'93 LX has the same power and weight as a stock Silvia or 180SX and one and a half times the torque. The power part is taken care of already by the factory.

That is exactly what I'd build. Fox bodies are nice, but I'd like the longer wheelbase for dori control. I also have a fear of live axles, with high hp cars (it may work for the 86, but... )
Otherwise, I think the US V8 is the perfect drifter motor - lots of torque, smooth power delivery. Only potential problem might be running out of revs - but w/ some head work and a powerband that starts at about 2k - I think I could overcome that. I'd wager a fair chunk that if Japan didn't have the outrageous taxes on import cars an motors that you'd see more muscle over there!

When the signal auto crew came down to Hawaii, they took ALOT of pictures of the drifting camaro because they don't see that very often in Japan...he's even in Option Magazine!

Either way, his car doesn't look like that anymore. Some old lady smashed into his passenger side, and I think his passenger headlight is cracked from bumping the guard rail at the track. plus his bumper is nice and smashed. Excellent BoroDori car!
