Could someone tell me what happens when you have a weak clutch?
The reason I ask is that before i bought my S13 the guy said he put a new clutch in.

Now when ever I shift i notice a delay between when i press in the clutch and actually shift in gear. It's slight, but i can't shift immediatley when I depress the clutch.
The shifter seems to get out of gear fine (as would be expected) but when it get close to the next gear it pauses for a split second and then goes in.

Another thing, my 5th gear will grind if i shift too fast. I have to wait about 1 1/2 second before i actually put it into 5th. I'm pretty sure its not the synchro because I can shift at crazy rpm's, I just have to wait to do it.

So with all that info, please someone tell me - did that bastard put in a weak clutch? or is it another piece of the tranny acting up?

I don't know if it's a weak clutch or synchros. Synchros is the first thought I had because of the grinding if you shift into 5th too fast. Any other ideas guys and gals?

Sounds like the blocking ring part of the synchro is worn. The blocking ring is what comes in contact with the speed gear and brings it up to speed with the output shaft. The inside of the ring is tapered and the speed gear has a matching taper. If the inside of the blocking ring wears to much then it won't be able to bring that gear up to speed as quickly. If you are pretty good with mechanical stuff then you could change them yourself and save a lot of money:rolleyes:.......but is you aren't sure then either just live with it or have a auto tech do it. But be warned. It WILL cost money.

Yea, I'm not really worried about the grinding in 5th, i can double clutch and get rid of that real easy. But it does annoy me that i have a delay between all my shifts

oh yea and 1 other thing that i didnt want to start a new thread for - both of my CV boots are cracked/broken. is the local nissan dealership parts store the only place to get some? oh and how difficult is it to replace them?

I agree, not a clutch problem. New fluid could help, or at least slow the damage. Does it remain hard to shift even once warm? I know my tranny is very tight (especially now with the B&M) when it's cold. After driving for 10 minutes or so it gets nice and smooth.

CV boots? That's an odd problem in a rwd car. Not impossible, just less frequent. Are these at the front or back of the car? If its the front then it's not a cv joint (cause there aren't any). If it is the rear CV joints then it's time to replace them. Having helped replace them on honda's I'd be inclined to have it done somewhere else. I've never done a 240 though, it may be easier with rwd. But if it's anything like the ones I've seen done, I want no part of it. It's not the difficulty, just the frustration. Not one ever went smoothly.
