Just want to confirm something about this issue...
I have an S14 SR and on cold starts it has, what sounds like a timing chain rattle for all of 5-6 seconds and then it ceases. If I drive it around and warm it up, at idle there will be an audible rattle, but if I go above 2,000 there is no rattle at all. I do not have the system hooked up as I am on an S13 SR ecu (car is cammed w/HKS step 2)
Is there any way to fix this without changing the cam gear? Or is it genuinely the cam gear that is defective/design flaw? A lot of people mentioned the timing chain guides and the like.

VTC rattle...change the intake cam sprocket to an S13 one (stock or aftermarket)

Do I need any special tools? Do I have to re-center the cams on the sprocket any special way or are there marks? Can't find the FSM at the moment...

Well, look at this guide from FRSPORTS...should give you an idea how to do it. You just need to swap out the intake side cam sprocket. Hold your breath that the chain link mark matches your cam sprocket mark so itll be easier. If not, your gonna have to count links to make sure you put it back to how it was...

bumping old thread...
How detrimental is it to keep driving around with this noise? I just noticed this noise the other day and might be the same thing. Is this noise constant or intermittent?

Once I am moving and RPMs are in the driving range, 2500-3500 for me, there is no noise. To the best of my knowledge it is the actual VCT solenoid that goes bad, and since I am on an S13 SR ecu and run cams that won't let me use it... it doesn't matter to me. I don't know of any detriments that would result from driving around with it for a long time, but I do plan on replacing it this summer.
The noise has been bad for only about 5-6k miles so far and I drift the shit out of the car when it runs and it hasn't gotten worse. The weird thing is that at idle it will rattle, then dissapear for 5-6 seconds, then start up again. On other days I won't have it at all... and on other days it is louder than my exhaust and everyone looks at me when I idle at a light haha
