First off, I know there is a art thread but that is just to open ended.
second, I searched so I know there is not a thread dedicated to just graffit art.
Your homies lil gang named tagged up some where does not qualify.
I know I am not the only one on this forum that likes this kind of art.

the rules:
Please try to post a picture with each post.
Please don't let this thread turn into a debate about artist, and weather graffiti is actual art.( this means no Mr. Brainwash vs. Banksy debates)
So NO BITCH FITS AND NIT PICKING. THANKS. I look forward to seeing good stuff.

For my post this is some Mr. Brainwash I was shown the other day. I thought it was really cool.

I do like BANKSY too. I like how his stuff seams to make you open your eyes or gives hope. I think this one was done at a prison.

Great stuff posted so far. Here's more for your viewing pleasure:

Please Note* A COUPLE PICTURES DO THESE ARTISTS NO JUSTICE SO I'VE INCLUDED THEIR WEBSITE LINKS. IF YOU LIKE THEIR STUFF, CHECK OUT THEIR SITES. ;)

This is my friend SEAK. Here is his website: SEAK: 3D Graffiti / Street Art / Fine Urban Art (http://www.seakone.com) (if you browse under in LA you just might find me, the "sleepy lolita" makeupless and tired at 7 in the morning. haha)

Brian,
I totally understand you. from what I hear, it takes some time, but its not for reading as much as it is just to look at, the use of colors and edges and such. I can't read half the shit, I have friends who do this and go to shows and stuff and can't read it all. I am told that alot of the time, it is the artist name.

for example look at this.....

Wow. Beautiful!

I personally love "Street Art' and "Uban Art." I just can't stand stupid people that "TAG". Tagging is the ugliest and most stupid form of expression.

These Urban art forms are what I truely consider masterpieces.

I just love to see these and not the stupid black gang b.s. like "Casper" or "Joker".
Taggers are people that don't have any imagination nor skills. I don't like when people mix up "graffiti art/ urban art" with troubled kids that can't spell correctly.

wow you love "STREET ART" and "URBAN ART" but not tagging?
I GUARANTEE that everyone that DOES "Street Art" or "Urban Art"
started by tagging!

AND NO taggers are not people that have no imagination
TAGGERS are the ones with the most imagination
GRAFFITI started by tagging...
then that tag turned into a little throw up
and then that throw up turned into a little bomb
then that little bomb turns into a little burner
then that little burner turns into a piece and then that
piece turned into your little "Street Art"

Tagging is such a lost art.

Couldnt agree with you anymore. I "tag" myself but i know I could never do such street art, even in my black books. I love seeing it, especially in high spots, its like damn how the hell they get it up there. But tags are the essential, its a start, and to me, they look sick when done right. Its just another way of getting up. tagging is a lost art, these new kids thinks is just about the burners or pieces now...

its funny crash was tell ing me the same thing, but I think it is all relative to where you put it. and who does it.
gang shit, like writting up your name over someone elses in you "hood"
dont like, doesnt look artistic at all, just looks like anyone wrote it but spelled it wrong.
and is disrespectful.

for example, if i put up a brand new fence, and stain it and everything, I had to work hard to pay for all the materials, so some ass hole can write crips, bloods, or bulldogs, or suranios and that kind of shit, pisses me off, I want to cut the bastards hands off.

but some guy writting the name of his tagging, or graffiti crew, and his name on an ugly old billboard, along the freeway, I am all for that shit. I mean if it is someones personal property thats fucked but shit the community pays for, like tunnels, and walls, and alleys and shit, just helps makes things look more colorful.
I think that is what squeekyclean was trying to say.

so please lets not let this thread turn into a debate over whats write and wrong, if you want to get technical, its all illegal, unless the person who owns the wall or property okays it. so lets just enjoi the art.

couldn't have said it better. ;) Yes, although graffiti did start off with tagging and then developed all other elements which made graff what it is today, there are boundaries and issues related to what defines graffiti and what is and is not acceptable. I personally think that the best tags are the ones with a real sense of style and/or message as opposed to all the little kid crap that we see nowadays. I asked a friend of mine who has been doing graff since the 80s, what his thoughts were in regards to ownership and where is tagging okay and not okay. Basically, we discussed the issue of who really owns anything? Yet at the same time art of any kind should be open to the public, and the public space is the ultimate "art gallery." Therefore there is no clear answer to this....rather a personal opinion as to the good "vital utilization for free thinking," and the bad use of public space. Either way, you can never really make everyone happy on both sides.
"graff" has a stigma attached to it. To some it is visual noise. This is because the general public doesn't understand it, can't read it, it's abstract to them. Some forms that seem to be more accepted are stencils/posters with an image they can relate to. Therefore in regards to how one can "decode" graff, sometimes there really is no way to decode it. It's an abstract art form often too convoluted and mysterious meant to be taken at face value.
People who have a general understanding of art are generally for graffiti. People who just don't get art, are the ones opposed to it.

i guess the bottom line is, that it's all up to the individual and not what society deems as right. Right or wrong, graff will always be an ongoing movement wherever tags, bombs, and pieces may be seen. But as i said and other graff artists may agree to, there is a boundary of respect for certain property even if others may not agree.

hopefully you understood what i'm saying. ;) haha.

anyway! here are some pictures i took when i went sight seeing in Toronto last Nov. more can be found on my myspace. I took a bunch in New York too, but sadly those pictures have been erased from my camera by my father. Dammit.

Tagging vs. Piecing... the never ending debate
The way we saw it, 99% of "graffiti artists" start out as taggers
taggers -> writers/bombers -> graffiti artists
tagging is integral in developing style, technique, can control and learning history
taggers will tag on anything they can lay their hands on
writers will tag on places that are least likely to get buff, will last AND will be noticed
by other worthwhile writers.
tagging the wall of the donut shop around the corner from your house = toy
catching a tag by the DJ booth of a cool club, downtown where the various lines intersect or an area frequented by writers = you know what's up.
We used to call those tags 'permanents'.

Differences in styles, depends on the influences.
For example, in LA cholo/pachuco/mexican muralist influenced the mostly Latin
crews coming up in East LA, downtown, etc and their style was very clean and simple.
West side crews were mostly influenced by the New York movement adn their style reflects it. Very slick and colorful. That was the 80s.
Nowadays it's too difficult to tell anymore, there are so many of them.
There appears to be a very 'organic' style happening here in LA.

Bombing refers to prolific work that could be tagging, throw ups or pieces. When you go bombing you try to hit as many spots as possible in one night.

STN Relic - example of simple letters, clean style and precission old school LA latin style:

STN Defer
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3256/2544431446_dd31210733.jpg?v=0

You can see that cholo old english influence and new organic forms in in this one:

Yeah, some of the earliest things I ever painted in the 90s where done there.
Only then it was the Venice Pavillion - skate, graff spot - before it got filled in with sand.

And that one grey piece by Satok is pretty ill.

....errr.... that's the crew
SA10K.... as in SA.TEN.K (there are more or less 10 of us in the crew)...
as in SATAN (what can I say, it was the early 90s...)
I did that last minute with a few left over scrap cans... stock tips on Rustos too, only the outline was done with Montana

What's preventing you from doing it?
I mean, most of us in the crew are in our late 30s and we still paint from time to time.

To be honest, I'm more of a gearhead but i have so much appreciation for art too. i'm not ballen enough to buy baller "cans" or "Paint pens" all that adds up. I think i would rather buy parts then cans but who knows i might start again.

Very good quality paint at reasonable prices.
I've only used 94s so far and I found the low pressure odd at first.I think I prefer high pressure paint.
I hear the Belton and Montana Gold are about the best paint you can get but haven't tried them yet.
Hard to shell ~$8 a can to paint something that won't last a day most of the time.
Stay away from Ironlak and Flame.

Actually...Ironlak's are not bad at all. Never heard of flame though.

MTN 94's and Montana BLACK are probably the best paint hands down. Hardcore's are my choice....but low-pressure is where its at for doing high detailed/controlled shit.

First Flame (Silver) lost all pressure - just shat the paint out.
Second can (light blue) clogged after 10 mins.
Haven't actually used Ironlak but all I talk to won't touch them.
Both, Flame and Ironlak are made in China.
But to be fair, the rest of of the Flames I've used have worked fine until now.

Since my last post, I've used Belton and gotta say it's amazing.
Best paint I've used so far. The release is solid and predictable.
And it can be had for $5.25 if you look around.
