I'm sure not a lot of people here can say they're debt free. Statistics say that Americans are over grand total of over $1 trillion dollars in debt. What about you?

I was down to only about 3k in mostly a student loan and a little bit on a credit card. This las month I put on about $1500 on a credit card moving back to cali.

What really sucks is that I got a nice raise moving out here, but I have less money left over after all my bills and expenses for the month.

$5,671.10

Car accident from a few years back. Was driving "my" car, which was under my mom's insurance, which she had neglected to tell me expired two days prior, got into an accident... Cop said it was my fault - I was turning on a green arrow, the bitch ran a red light and hit me, how the FUCK is that MY fault?! ...So, I got stuck with the bill for the damages to the other car - $10,187.10 - Thanks Mom.

Other than that little piece of nonsense... No other debts here.

damn 22 and have a house and toys to play with...what is ur gig...i gotta to be doin what u doin...it seems that all ur debts are for the positive...

i got a career going in digital multimedia... so ugh... flash, web, motion graphics, and 3d animation.

most of the money comes from freelancing [the amount of work i get is directly proportional to the parts I get for my 180sx lol] but I also got a steady 9-5 doing the same stuff which pays the bills/mortgage/car payments. on the weekends i help out at my uncles computer store slinging parts for $9hr + (a lot of) commission. Once I got a steady freelancing "pool" I'll be quitting my uncle's place though as customers seem to be getting more ignorant and retardedly cheaper as the days go by....

Its always so easy to get yourself in debt but hard as hell to get out. Just the way credit card companies like it. I recommend you guys see the credit card documentary called Maxed Out. It documents the cruel reality of credit card companies and the collectors who will stop at nothing to make you pay your debt.

True. Very few people, not just Americans enjoy the benefits of delayed gratification.

I have consistently held back from buying expensive cars and buying a house because I don't want to commit myself to a standard of living that is not easily kept up when the economy slouches. Good thing, now I'm married and back in school but I didn't have to really change anything other than I haven't finished my S13 that I planned on having done in Feb. :P

34,
All debt = $9900.00.

Net worth is well into the positive however. I started saving at 23. A little bit here and there adds up exponentially. Money Market CDs and the 401K/Roth iras have done us well. Start saving now kiddies. You'll be my age before you know it.

21, Roughly 9-10k or so between school loans, IS300, motorcycle, and a little bit of CC debt. Nothing bad though I think.

With the motor build on my S14 about to commence, I won't be more in debt just mo broke. I plan to build the motor with all cash or nothing. I would hate to blow it up again and still owe on it :(.

25k in student loans - Graduated.
10K CC
13K Personal Loans

I made a mistake of getting a 10K Cashcall loan a few years ago. Interest on it was like 38 percent. I was doing mortgage loans back then, figured it pay it off in a month. didnt happen. for the people in alot of debt. i was in debt 15k with just credit cards, i ended up going through credit counseling where they talk to all your credit cards and get them to lower the interest rate by alot(one of my cards was 24% and they got it to 7%) and they will set you up with one payment a month. it worked great for me. i will be all paid off in about 5 month and my credit score was over 750 when i bought my new car so i doubt it hurts your credit. if you would like more info about this PM me. it helped me a bunch.

BTW i am in no way connected to this company, they just helped me alot.

bout $20k on my truck
around $4k in credit cards
Track car is 100% mine. I can't see how people can put car parts on credit. Then again, i do have bills for shit I shouldn't have gotten. I guess its cuz when i buy car parts i know it will probably break on the track and i will hate paying for it later. I dont live by the stupid saying "you only live once" when it comes to money, but I do like the choices i've made and wouldn't go back on any of them. I feel that getting some debt and staying on top of it helps you grow a little bit. I fucking hate friends that go to school and can't manage their money cuz they get everything handed to them. Like even in this thread some of you say you owe your parents money. Like damn, i wish i could owe my parents money, but they never had it in the first place lol. This thread makes me want to pay off my credit cards tho lol.

yea, lots of cc debt in here. I guess that doesn't surprise me, but still, if I had any outstanding cc debt, I sure wouldn't be even thinking about modifying my car, or even owning one necessarily. educational debt and mortgages are necessary evils of a sort- sure, you have debt, but that's better than trying to save up for 20 years to buy a house outright and renting in the meantime, or not going to graduate school for 10 years because it costs so much.

It is hard to enjoy parts you put on credit cards when the debt load stresses you out. Paying cash only for school and parts now while I finish my degree.

I wish interest payments towards a mortgage were tax deductable in Canada.

Is it worth it to go like 5k into debt to get your car running like a champ? Or some suspension work?

I make about $1000 every month, living with my parents paying rent ($100) cell phone ($60) insurance ($100) and paying credit card payments ($50-$100). So that leads about $600 for me every month which usually goes to fixing my car or paying for gas.

Yups student loans are definitely considered debt. Amazingly research has shown that there are still a lot of people in their forty's trying to pay off their student loans. Guess that expensive college tuition didn't really pay off later their lives.

I trade stocks on margin sometimes, right now my margin account is at about $65k, but that $65k has made me about $10k extra in the last two months (including the $3500 hit I took yesterday :( ), so it's beating out the 6% APR by quite a bit.

Very minimal credit debt though, I keep a small balance (less than 1%) on each of my two cards and use them for every purchase I make every month, but pay it down during the grace period.

No other debt.....house and cars paid off.

Not the best for the economy, unfortunately - the US thrives on consumer debt.

Not the best for you either IMO. Unless you are planning on paying cash for absolutely everything, having no credit is only going to hurt you. You don't have to go into massive debt just to establish and maintain a good credit score, you can use a credit card and still not pay more than a few dollars a year in interest while establishing a decent (700+) credit score.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT even think about trading on margin if you don't have a VERY DEEP understanding of the way that exchanges work.

Very true. I've been doing is for 10+ years now and margin trading for about 3 years.

The only reason I can really see for being in debt is either owning a house, or being dumb with money.

What you are saying has some validity to it, but there are circumstances where debt can be a good thing. Without going too deep into finance talk (since that's not really the point of this thread), with how low interest rates are now for consumer loans, you can actually make money off of debt. You might have $25k to buy that brand new car, but if you put a minimal amount down, get that 0% (or somewhere around that) and invest the rest of the money, this year you would have made about $2-3k extra from most basic mutual funds. By the time your 48 month or so loan is up, you probably made an extra $10k just by taking out a loan.

Now of course, not all investments go that way, you may lose money too, but with smart money management on your part, you could potentially make a significant amount of money by going into debt. :)

Debt doesn't have to be a bad thing people.

Silentoreo34

I agree with you 100% going of topic of the tread. My friend from when he was 16 he took loans out (grandparents co-signed) agaisn't his name and put them to CD's. This was back when CD has a good interest % but now its crap and I feel like I should just throw my money in the toilet when my parents tell me I should get a CD. Back to my point my friend did this for a few years and kept recycling the loan/cd with the same rate, he has about 20,000 saved up in just about 4 years. His loan/cd are coming to a close mid 2011 and he is going to put a down payment on a town house.

Well, today this would seem to be impossible due to hard times and banks hardly giving out good CD rates. But been a some odd years now but before you could get a loan with about 3-4% on in and a cd that put out 5%. Basically after inflation you make a little money, but its a good way to start/learn how to save. Again the bank was okay with it because they were loaning out the money but also getting the money back. Therefore the money never really leaves. But now of days this stuff won't happen.

Looks like you opted for the red pill and can finally see the matrix for what it really is. For that i congratulate you.
I just checked my credit score yesterday with the big three. Having not seen it since last december, i see that they all switched to a new scoring system to align themselves better. Probably for the eventual merger in the future. My score is worth less now as a result. Which is their attempt to rescale the system to what it really should have been in the first place. But none of that matters to me anymore. After seeing that Wall Street sought enjoyment in playing with the livelyhoods of so many investors, i decided "fuck a bank". Fuck them all. I run my business with my own money, and always will.

Sad truth is if you want good credit it seems like to need to be in debt. Revolving debt.

im about to turn 21, and I will finish off the 14k i borrowed for a new car in December 2011. (just over 2.4k left) I pay off my CC every month, so no debt there. I am about to get a house (150k-200k is my range atm) and with all the rates as they are, I will only be paying the utility bills, and putting off the rest on roommates who I've already talked to about moving in with me (contract signing them for minimum of 1 year, just in case).

It is still running like a champ. I am the ultimate savvy shopper. I prey on the good deals...this was even before the recession started. So, i wasn't taking advantage of anyone.

cool story bro

I am in no debt. Why is this thread even started? Because it's expensive to own a drift car? Lol? I would never get myself into a thread over a car. 25k in debt, just graduated

Ive got a good paying job and wont be spending much so Id like to pay it off within 1-2 years so just to not have anymore to worry about. But obviously this is way earlier than it should be paid

Since I will still be paying all of the interest, will my credit score suffer in any way?

190k mortgage @4.75%
40k student loans @2.5%

no auto loans, no CC debt.

I pay for everything on my American Express, because I get 1-3% back on every purchase (~$500/yr). But I don't buy what I can't afford and I pay it off every month so I've never paid interest on it.

on the plus side:
$20k in the bank
~$70k in retirement savings so far (401k/IRA)

23. just went from having maxed out credit cards (at about 6,000) and only making 10k a year because of working at the great old Best Buy as a part timer. one card had a 29.7APR and the other is 21.2.

sold my s13, paid off the 29.7 apr card, i only owe a little less then 3k now which feels amazing, no more working just to afford credit card payments. and now have a job making 25-35k a year depending on how much over time i have to work at the new job. life feels so much better with less debt and knowing you'll be out of it very soon.

student loans $25k + interest (still owe something like 15k i think..... graduated in 05)
Massive RB build had to put about 6k on a card after spending all my savings (only owe $2700 now and i transfered it to a 0% card till july)
$650 on another card (paying off next week)
still owe my boss $2k for the Tomei RB28 short block (just paid him $2k monday)
something like $8k in the bank

PERFECT CREDIT
11 years of credit.... never one late payment... not one.... i never pay minimums either.... thats for the birds.... most of my cards (6 personal, one buisness) are at 12.99%-13.99% right now (pretty good for credit cards) and my limits range from 4k to 16k..... the buisness card is rediculous like 50k lol

I'm not sure if i've participated in this thread in the past few years but here is my current situation:

$9k left for my X-runner
$14k left on my stu loans
$100k + for my house

I plan to have my student loans paid off soon since the interest is crazy high - 6.7% or something.

My X-runner is only at 1.99% so i dont mind stretching it.

Looks you and I have a similar outlook for the next few years. Except that I have $158K left on my mortgage, $15K left on the student loan, a few hundred on a CC with no interest, and no car payment.

Still building up my savings from things purchased after I bought my house (furniture, appliances, etc.) and I'm no where near $70K on my IRA, but I only started paying in last year.

Not married, no kids, trying not to splurge in the interest of my future and the world's economic uncertainty. I'm liking the AmEx approach. I've often condsidered going that route. If you don't mind my asking, what's your payoff schedule? After every purchase, weekly, or just before the statement date?

I'm using their credit card to buy my car parts because i don't have my own and their is still plenty left to order. just doesn't make sense to pay them out when ill be owing them money again in a week, plus my parents keep a list of what i owe them and for what, believe me there is nothing missing from it lol. peace

$7K from my wifes student loan
$800~ from new pots and pans
$400 left from wifes wedding/engagement ring combo
Wife has about $9K in 401K

My savings is empty, had to lend some family members money due to some emergencies. But it added it up to around $7K since we paid off our car earlier this year. Its amazing how much money you save when not paying an auto loan.
