Well, i'm pretty bummed as i feel i got ripped off today. I had three gaskets bust on me all at the same time!

Exhaust Manifold gasket, Exhaust manifold inlet gasket, and lastly the compressor outlet gasket!

I could have done the work myself unbolting everything and replacing the shredded gaskets, but i don't have time with my busy schedule so i decided to take it to a mechanic. He had to as you know unbolt everything to take out the exhaust manifold/turbo/turbo elbow to replace all the gaskets. He then said i was missing some studs that go into the head which the exhaust manifold bolts up to, so he had to re thread the whole, and put me in a new stud. Took him a total of 5 hours to complete the job and have everything running like new.

Well to get to the point, i had to go pick up the gaskets myself from phase2 which was $50. The part that hurts the most is that i was charged $300 for labor......Now, am i trippen or is that WAY expensive for the work that he did?

300 for 5 hours labor isnt too bad, a tad high, but considering, its not too bad.

I know of some shops around here that charge 80+ bucks an hour labor...

naw that sounds ok.....i sure as hell woudn't wanna rethread the head.

5 hours for $300 isn't too bad as far as labor goes. you shoulda done it yourself though!

Was really considering it, but i don't really have any time for myself. Always doing something either school or work related :\

That is not even close to "ripped off". The shop rate at the shop where I work is $84/hour. Multiply that by 5 and it comes out to $420. That guy charged you $60/hour shop rate, that is cheap as hell for an actual shop to charge!

Yeah shops around here charge $75-$125 a hour depending on the shop. I'd personally rather pay 5 hours of my own time but I understand not having time or a place to do something and really needing it done. It sucks but some times you have to pay someone to work on your car.

thats a good deal dude.
the good shops around the valley and burbank will charge 85-95 an hour.

You cant get decent labor much cheaper in CA.

No not at all. I think what it was that was bugging me, is that i could have done the work myself, but with a busy schedule it would have been difficult! I know for next time to just be patient and do the work myself. :ddog:

You all are trippin. $60 hr is CHEAP for labor.

I don't really see what the problem or even the need for this thread is. Not to mention how/why would three gaskets all go at the same time.

You went to someone for work, didn't think about how much it would cost you or even the fact to do simple math.

You paid him for the service.

Now you come on here and bitch or something?

I don't get it.

Sure, you could've done it yourself, but you didn't.

So what's the problem?

My shop charges 104/hr. You gotta thinking economically, how long do you think it would of took you to do the job? The time you take to fix your car you could of been working making money. I dont think you make $300+ bucks in 5 hours but you just save yourself alot of headache/time and plus the work he does should have a warranty.
