im trying to explain to someone exactly what the alphanumerics are and it hit me that I do not know what the meaning of X is.

Im assumin S and Z are related to the chassis but what does that X stand for

it marks the spot

ie 240 Silvia and X here it is. hence 240sx.

300Z and X here it is.

I could be wrong on this, but I thought it began with the changeover from the 280Z to the 280ZX, with the "X" to mean Luxury.

The appointments, compared to what came before them, were... This, of course, is speaking clearly in 1978 terms, not 2008.
Also, this was adopted when Nissan started to add "By Nissan" to the Datsun logo/name, so I am more than willing to bet that this had quite a bit to do with it too.

No one knows definitively what it means.

See, the strange thing is that Nissan didn't exactly make ANY of this common knowledge, kinda like nailing down for 100% which options were ALWAYS available with one another, lol

x it means we are have the bastard child version of all the nissan.
hence 240sx instead of the silvia, 300zx instead of the fairlady,

might not apply to the 180sx though. hahah

09-13-2008, 09:45 PM
Maybe cuz 240S sound kinda stupid.... And i think it has something to go with the fact Nissan started making ZX's after Datsun. ZX's had more options im pretty sure. Sinc the 240 has a lot of options compared to the older Z, maybe thats why its an SX.

I always thought the "x" meant "export". So the 300Z became the 300ZX when it came here. The Silvia became the 240SX which to me meant 2.4l Silvia export. I'm most likely wrong but it makes sense to me, and because there is no rep anymore I'll type whatever the fuck I want to.

I remember hearing that it meant "Luxury" too back when I had a 300ZX. Shit, leather seats and a sweet ass knight rider digital dashboard, that shit had luxury to the GILLS.

Wikipedia confirms X means Luxury, but it's Wikipedia so take what you will from that.

I do know that with the early "Z" cars, the "X" was the luxury models :l101:. I would guess since they started calling all "Z" cars "ZX" it was just a selling point to a cheaper sports car...to seem you were getting a luxury model car. My 2 cents :2c:.

you're obviously rolling like an idiot because IN JAPAN IT'S A 180SX
also, "300Z became 300ZX"?? the japanese model name was fairlady, so that explanation's out, too.
then "2.4l silvia export"?? how do you explain the 180sx chassis?

that explanation is some of the most bullshit uneducated guesswork i've seen concerning s-chassis EVER

In 1953, a fledgling company called Rocket Chemical Company and its staff of three set out to create a line of rust-prevention solvents and degreasers for use in the aerospace industry, in a small lab in San Diego, California.

http://www.wd40.com/images/wd40company/history-50s.jpgIt took them 40 attempts to get the water displacing formula worked out. But they must have been really good, because the original secret formula for WD-40®—which stands for Water Displacement perfected on the 40th try—is still in use today.

I think it was because of that. Nissan wanted to sell the Fairlady in the US but they knew that Fairlady wouldnt sound appealing to Amerians (Cobras, Mustangs, Corvettes, n GTOs), so they change it to 300zx. They figure that 300ZX sounds better than FAIRLADY.

Ah proof that your are probably 18 years old lol. J/k . You do realize that the 240Z was a Fairlady Z in Japan? You do realize that both the 1600 roadster and 2000 roadsters were Fairlady's in Japan? Oh you probably forgot about that. Neither of which had X in their names. Oh and while we are at this least anyone forgot the Pulsar NX! LOL hahhahahhhahhahaha.

Oh and the B210 and 1200 had a performance option called GX in fact Datsun Comp sold special heads for racing for them. X at Nissan has always been one of their performance designation in my opinion. Most all the cars they have sold with the x designation have been sporty car. The 77 200sx was a sx and it was a Silvia in Japan. Yet the 200sx in the 80's was a Silvia in coupe version and a Gazelle in hatchback. The 180sx replaced the Gazelle. The 280zx replaced the 280Z.
So the X was some kind of performance upgrade designation in Nissans eyes most likely.
More interesting is the fact that they took the 350 back to the straight Z designation and eliminated the X which to me signals it being a straight ahead sports cars and nothing more. Most all X designation cars have had back seats.

So there you have examples for the discussion to go either way, luxury or Sports?
I think Nissan just likes the X designation because guess what? People don't forget it and we are all discussing it. HMMMMM sounds like they hit on a good idea. LOL

everyone knows throwing random Z's, X's, and R's after numbers makes them sound fast

if you need proof just look at sportbike names

1000RR
GSX-R
ZX10
R1

and other shit
type R
type X

R pretty much means racing, so anything with R in it makes you think of racing

Z's and X's just sound fast.

how stupid would it look to have a 240SW or 240SF?

boooo

like it or not zilvia thats an exellent idea and im just about 100% sure that y the names were changed, because most americans woulndt buy sports cars called silvia, and fairlady.

and as far as the x i think it just something that the marketing people in nissan said would help sell more cars, cause when it comes down to it thats usually what its all about.
