Bought a used LSD through a private sale. The nice people at FedEx decided to let a 30lb. box slide around and get beat up. Maybe they played catch with it, who knows. With the material being as strong as it is, it makes one wonder how the fuck did they manage to break it?
Pics:
Pic right out the box with two pieces that broke off along with packing (yes, he only used a plastic bag and paper for packing...)

Left bearing damage, bent to the point where it broke what's under it

Right side, same damage as the left

My questions are: Is this an easy fix and is it still something I can use? Should I just return it?
Thanks in advance.

well, damn that sucks man. but my wild guess would be that the damage sucks. and you should return it since it was like that.. but i will say that the damage there seems odd..i dont know how that couldve happened.
i dont think it will mess anything up though..
obviously get new bearings.(if the damage wasnt there you should get new bearing though)
thats my 2 cents

I'd return it. Honestly no need to try to fix a product that was broken when you got it, especially something as large as an lsd.
Honestly though it should have been packed in the box better.
paper isn't gonna do much for a hunk of steel rolling around.

Well hopefully the seller got more than the 100 dollar insurance it comes with. There really isnt anyway to fix that though. It doesnt look like it will hurt the actual functionality of the limited slip but you paid for a good condition lsd. Why settle for that? Contact the seller and see what he says. Find out how much insurance he put on it.

You should take it up with the seller instead of trying to fix someone else's mistake

Seller only put $100 insurance on the diff.
I told Brian(Serris) to take it up with the seller.
It was his fault it resulted like this.
Poor packaging is seriously at fault.

Thanks for the quick replies.
Yes, he only insured it for $100(standard, just as garagelu said). Long story short, I asked him to send it without a signature required, he told me it can't be insured without a sig, I replied to send it to my work, he got the reply too late and sent it without full insurance.
Yeah, I was really excited. I tracked that thing every day! And yeah, paper/plastic on a 30lb. item? How hard is it to get foam and bubble wrap? :loco:
Anyway, I will make a claim with FedEx and use that $100 to get new bearings. I also checked with a Cusco distributor to see how much a diff. case is, just out of curiosity. They didn't have a price yet (I called around 4pm) and of course, it will have to be special ordered.
Nothing is ever easy, eh?

Not to deter your decision to make a claim with FedEx, however expect several weeks to pass by before the claim is fully processed.

That's fine, as long as I get my money from them.

That 100 bucks will help cover one of your bearings. I know new diff bearings from the dealer are right around $83 dollars a piece for 240SXs.

Take a close look at the bearings, you should find a manufacturer (it won't be nissan...koyo maybe)and a part number marked on them. Try calling around a couple of industrial bearing suppliers for a replacement. Same thing for 3/4s the Nissan price.

Shippin companies seem to be real assholes lately with claims.

I had the same problem with mine when I got it but in my case only one of the bearings was fucked up. If I remember correctly the Part Number is.. 30209J (At least for Koyo) Call A P Bearings.. (818) 716-4003. Good Luck

Yeah, I found a place that sells the bearings for about $48 each.
And I'll still try making the claim, regardless. It doesn't hurt to try!

haha yeah me too.
In high School I went to 3 interviews at UPS.
Everytime I would see how TERRIBLE they treat everything.
So, when I get a box back that is all torn up, I'm really not surprised. (well, sometimes I am when it looks like the box went through a huge lawn mower)
yeah, it does not hurt to try for the claim. Maybe you'll get it.
My last 2 UPS claims got denied. The boxes were torn up and the part was hanging out... of of course, improperly packaged. I guess I should have thought about the part being halfway out the box, THEN padding it accordingly.

hahaha i worked at Fedex, and honestly i did some kicking and throwing to the boxes. Cant blaim me for nonstop work in a hot ass truck with the line all backed up and some Dike boss yelling at you, i threw the boxes because i had to move faster, and kicked a few because how mad that job made me, dont EVER work as a package handler.

Gratuitous use of Foam and tape is very necessary when shipping stuff. Whoever is receiving better have a good sharp knife to cut throught six layers of packaging tape.

seriously, just replace the bearings, I'd be suprised if they ran more than $150.
