ok i have been searching for a while now, and i keep finding different answers to this question. I heard that a 95+ j30 diff bolts right into an s13. I then saw somewhere else that you would have to get your driveshaft shortened. I just want someone to clear this up for me. I have a 90 hatch, and i want to know what i need to ask for at the junkyard!! And ya i know im a noob but plz refrain from neg repping me, i just figured i would ask the zilvia gods on here to help me out.

it is a 1/2 longer than your stock diff. Technically you should shorten your driveshaft or get a ABS driveshaft which is 1/2 inch shorter. If you don't your putting stress on the center support bushing on the forward part of your driveshaft and you are forcing your driveshaft 1/2 into the back of your transmission.
Consequences? eliminating the freeplay in a driveshaft set can and will cause wear on your rear trans seal. Blowing that will drain the oil out of your trans causing more failure in the trans department. These are the consequences. Whether or not you heed the warnings and take a chance is up to you.
Some people will say oh I put a stock driveshaft on with a J30 diff its fine. Ya for now but for how long and do you want to take the chance. Do it right or suffer possibly in the long run.

It also does not bolt right in, you have to swap the rear cover.

I'm about to also put a J30 lsd into my 90 coupe. What about buying a one piece driveshaft from the driveshaftshop? what do I tell them so I can get the correct length?

can't you just take the innards and install it into the s13 casing?

They will know...tell them ABS Driveshaft length.
I've already checked just a tad out of budget right now for the daily.
I'm running a regular non-ABS shaft on my hatch w/ a 93 J30Diff.
Go ahead and buy a new tailshaft seal as mine just all of a sudden started leaking the next day w/o even driving it yet.
Most techs @ work say 1/4-1/2" is not a big deal when they looked @ mine...granted its not how its supposed to be....Mines a daily and I only beat on it a tad every now and then.
NINJA: Go ahead and buy SPL bushings also $90+ - they are needed For sure!

that isnt very cheap tho, those driveshafts are like 450 dollars.

Get a Z32 VLSD and get a set of pre 95 J30 5 bolt axles. No work will need to be done to your driveshaft and you will retain the stock gearing 4:08 of your car, while the J30 is 4% taller at 3:92. Oh and remember to put your stock rear cover on the Z32 diff to bolt it in.

I also take it that I have to swap the j30 cover off and put the stock 90 diff cover on correct?

If you're buying two of them. Several places sell them for $260-280 shipped. Unless you like paying extra, don't do it.

you mean the eyelets. The J30 diff has the same size eyelets as the the S14 if you don't get the eyelet bushings and mount bolts with the J30 you can use the ones off your S14 diff.

mine bolted up by swapping the diff cover and using the j30 bolts. but i didnt see the drive shaft move or anything. i also know a couple of guys that did this and have been driving fine for more than 2 years without any problems. im kinda worried now that i read this thread. thanks for the info (drift freaq)
