hello,
I was just wondering that who has the fastest 240 (top speed wise) in the states.
I own 1990 RPS13 with SR.
This past summer i tried to top my car off but backed out because my front tires are not Z rated matter of fact they are R rated (means cheap stuff). anyway I was driving at 60mph and floored the throttle. in less than a minute i was going 158mph(blitz powere meter) at around 6000 RPM in fifth gear. Thats when i decided to back off because of my front tires arent Z rated. At 158mph car felt very smooth, no vibration or any kind of any weird sounds. I wish i had better tires that day i could have gone 180+mph.
At that time my car was modified quite a bit but since than i have fully built it and hope to get better results this summer. cant really speed during winter because it snows bad here in ohio.
So according to Blitz power meter i have gone 158mph and would like to know if there is anybody out there who took there 240 beyond 158, if yes what speed and around what RPM.
Thanks,
JR

I thought the 240 was Gear limited to someewhere around ~165?

Uhm dude R means Radial, all tires you will find for your car now-a-days are radial, unless you are able to find some oddball place selling bias ply tires. Or you are running R compound tires, in which case, you are not going to have any life out of them on the streets, but you will grip very nicely and they should be able to handle the extremely high speeds. Check your tires, what kind are they? It might say something like 205/55/16 HR, in which case you are running an H rated tire. Or it could say 205/55ZR16 in which case you would be running a Z rated tire. Sounds like it probably says 205/55R16 89H or something to that extent.
For the other thing, yeah, i think they are geared only for about 165 mph or somewhere right around that. You could probably push it higher if you change out the gearing to accomodate the higher speeds. Just need to have the power to push it to those speeds.

With stock gearing (SR 0.759:1 5th, 4.083:1 final), stock tire size for an early S13 (205/60-15), you're turning ~2600 engine revs per mile. At 6000 rpm, that means you'd be travelling about 138 mph, not 158. The SR rev limiter at 7700? rpm gear limits the car to ~178 mph, but the drag limit will be much lower for most cases.
It's not hard to get a hold of different final drive gears, though... Just using stock S15 gearing (0.767:1 6th, 3.692:1 final) extends the gear limit out to ~194 mph. Change the rear tire size to 245/45-17 and that goes to ~201 mph. Now all you have to do is make enough horsepower to overcome the intense wind resistance :p
If I had a lot of money to blow I'd love to build a 240SX for the Silver State Classic or a similar open-road top speed race. Of course to tackle the unlimited class the car would end up no longer really resembling a 240SX anymore... unlimited class competition is dominated by the likes of heavily modified Corvettes and Porsches. On that note a 300ZX or Skyline would probably be a better starting point...

Tim,
Yes, R means Radial tires and thats what i have. no they are not H, V or Z rated they are simply 215/55R18.
One other thing I dont think you guys read my post properly, i said my car is quite a bit modified = engine stroker kit and yes my GEARBOX IS MODIFIED as well. since 99 i have gone through 3 transmissions and 2 engines. But now they are both fully built.
I wish i had the nismo speedo meter to get the proper reading but i think power meter is pretty close to accurate. I know i was going over 150 because my friend next to me on a motorcycle was doing close 160 as well.
Oh yes one more thing, my car is not just fron top speed, but drag, and road course as well. Street legal

Umm - maybe your speedo is off b/c you are driving with bus tires?
I'm sure Ryan could do the math on how your tires go 738 revolutions per mile compared to OEM tires going 817. 215/55/18.
In any event. BS.
