Hello guys,
I am new to this board so any stupid questions will have to be forgiven. I currently have a red (automatic) 1990 300zx Twin Turbo with 57,000 miles. I would love to modify that car except two things are keeping me from doing it: I have no money left with the high car payment and insurance payment; and it's an automatic.
I bought my car in Iowa where I live and go to college BUT I am currently in Florida on an internship and could sell my car for much more in Florida than what I got it for in Iowa. I really love my car but I want to move on and experience another Nissan car. Since the Skyline is out of the question, I have decided to focus on the 1996 or 1997 240sx (SE or LE) with a silvia engine swap.
For those of you that know out there, what is the biggest difference between a 1996 and 1997 240sx?
I plan on trying to buy a high-mileage 5-speed 240 and getting it cheaper that way (which will be ok since I would replace virtually everything on the car.)
Assuming I have $15,000 and want to make my car a 12 second car-- or at least significantly faster than my 300zx, what modifications would I be able to afford? So far I have come up with two options and I would like the feedback on both.
OPTION ONE: I would put in a SR20DET engine in with an intake, exhaust, clutch, flywheel, and some other small mods. I would also have 18" wheels-- either SSR GT1, or Racing Hart/Axis. With the small amount of money left over I would try to put in a big brake kit-- perhaps project "mu."
What horsepower and 1/4 mile time would I be looking at here?
OPTION TWO: (My personal favorite!) I love the idea of having a "sleeper" car, so I would do away with the big wheels and have the exterior appear stock-- perhaps except for a carbon fiber hood painted the same color as the car and a big exhaust peeking out.... and also some cleared corner lights, etc. I would put in the perennial SR20DET engine with a bigger turbo and intercooler kit as well as the exhaust (which includes downpipes, no cats, etc.) and intake. I would further beef up the engine by adding stronger gears, headers, etc. I would also have a clutch and flywheel with maybe a short-throw shifter. Injectors would probably be needed too.
What kind of horsepower and 1/4 mile time would I be looking at here? Anyone have any examples? For both of these options, are they doable with $15,000? Keep in mind that money has to also include installation $$$. If you wish, come up with an option three which could combine #1 and #2... (but no body kits please!)... and realize I would like to be able to move past all of the jokers in the VR4's and Supras and into Corvette territory... (ZO6)... THANKS A LOT for your advice.
