so i was cruising to work today not a care in the world. then suddenly boom, the car just dies. luckily i was near an exit and i managed to get all the way up it and onto the side of a low traffic street.

1. Electrical = Works

2. Fuel Pump = Works

at this point im like fuck. this isnt good. the tow truck gets there, and i get her to a local shop. we pull the valve cover and this is what i am greeted with.

apparently my upper timing chain guide decided to say hello to my drivers side cam sprocket. now, all you engine gurus, can i just get a new cam, adjust timing and call it a day? or is it more involved than that?

How does the timing chain look, because im assuming its probably wedged in there pretty good because of the crank sprocket spinning?

timing chain looks like its fine. didnt seem to be wedged at all. i could move it freely still.

If it were me I would buy a new cam, pull the front cover/ oil pump and check the crank sprocket. The install the cam and set timing to fsm. Once timing was right turn the motor over by hand until the darker links are back on top carefully listening for binding or grinding. If there isnt any re-install front cover and you should be good. I dont understand how that happens in the first place.

Rotate the engine by hand after the cam is replaced. You may have gotten some piston/valve contact, any resistance will mean you've done more damage.

And remove what's left of the top guide, as well as the upper one. They shouldn't have been there in the first place.

ur motors an sr right? I have a s13 sr intake cam and sprocket which you can use for exhaust to if you more it a few links iirc

Wow, he even included a pic of it. Since when did an SR look like a KA under the valve cover?

Ronin, I have some in my old engine, just need to pull them. If you can wait a few days, PM me.

I agree with that one. Did you hear anything when it died? And has that engine ever been taken apart?

Install new cam or remove the head. There's no other way to know what damage occurred.
