View Full Version : To those with z32 rear uprights? shock mount bushing and coilover?

I currently run z32 rear uprights with full poly bushings besides the shock mount on some KTS coilovers.

I plan on swapping the KTS coilovers for something a bit better such as the koni/GC combo or maybe silkroads or something....

If anybody has any suggestions for what coilovers to run on a daily driven s14 with z32 uprights I would like to hear em....

but in the mean time I wanted to swap out the stock bushing for some nismo ones.

I took a look at the stock shock bushings how they are currently setup on the car and they are stretched pretty bad and really dont seem to sit right.... Because the shock mount is at an angle.
Here is a pic...

This wont allow me to use the nismo upright bushing since the nismo bushing sits straight and is very solid.

So do we really have no option for an upright bushing because of this angle?

I would really like to keep my lightweight z32 rear uprights but if I cant swap out those soggy bushings I will more than likely go back to the stock iron uprights.

Any info on this is appreciated.

That's going to happen with an S14. Many people claim that it will be fine, but if you're worried about it, the only way to really remedy it is to put a spherical bearing in the upright.

anyone know if this problem is the same for s13?

I could have sworn that some one made those already, maybe someone will post about it.

Yes they wont fit perfect, somewhat just like the picture above

SPL sells a bushing, but it's like $300 bucks or something huge. Maybe a group buy could lower it to something more reasonable, but I don't know if there's enough z32 upright users that care enough to get them to form a worthwhile market.

Def, who posts in NissanRoadRacing.com is investigating making some that should beat SPL's by a hundred bucks or so, but I don't know how far he's along in the process.

I'm following the progress loosely since I'd consider doing it, but I have other problems to worry about and not enough resources to play.

Im pretty sure its a grade 8....something from ace hardware... I know I need to upgrade.

A spherical bushing sounds nice.
Any links?

I'm making a few as time permits(full time engineering job + getting my masters = not much time to mess with cars), but the expressed interest has been "tempid" at best so I haven't really gone ahead with making a bunch of the Z32 shock mount sphericals.

I use Aurora bearings(the best bearings that are remotely reasonably priced IMO), and they're spec'd to hold 32,000 lbs each, so they should last essentially forever.

If there is actually some interest I'd get a batch made up. But the pieces are not cheap to make, so it's potentially me being stuck with a lot of parts if people fall through. I'm not making much off this stuff, and started doing it just to help people out, but most people have been somewhat slow to commit to anything.

The target price is just above half the SPL bearings(made by Border I think?), but I don't want to get into specifics since I don't think a small venture like this is worthy of stepping up to vendor status and peddling my wares.

Actually, they fit just fine...

cheater, sexy custom housing :)

However, McCoy's solution is the best one I have seen/ heard of that isnt incredibly specialized (i.e. expensive). Get a custom shock mount, there is a guy on here that was making some especially for those using koni inserts (his name was 180 <something><something>, check the search feature for that part of his name as well as look for the koni thread about using Ground Control sleeves and koni shocks)

Hope this helps some.

Yea it does look good in that pic unloaded, but hows it look when the suspension is under load?

The same, except the shock body sits a little closer to the upper mount ;)

Def's plan sounds good, for those that need it. Aurora is definitely good shit, and the price isn't too bad.

To answer the OP's original question, there are lots of coilover makers that offer a Z32-knuckle option... I know for a fact that Stance does, and have heard that others do as well. You could start by asking them what they think about the mis-alignment.

Not really, any aftermarke S13/Z32 coilover should fit the same.

It's Veilside180sx... and that is his housing, actually his first S13 rear housings.

I'll take another look tonight, but I'm quite sure there is no binding in the lower mount...

sounds like spherical is the way to go....but I am impatient and may just drop the dough for spls stuff as long as it allows for that range of motion.

Thx for the help.

If anyone knows of cheaper sphericals than spl (the charge $300) please let me know.
