ok, so here's the deal. i'm looking to get a carbon fiber hood, however there are so many choices/companies. SO to narrow it down i will be going with a well known brand for they should have a better fit and better quality hood.

here are the 3 companies i've been looking at

SEIBON

VIS

CARBON-CREATIONS

any other quality cf hood that you might be aware of!!

tell me what you guys think. ANSWERS FROM PPL THAT HAVE OR HAVE HAD CF HOODS WOULD BE THE BEST...

please don't just pick a random company.

thanks

P.S. its going to be a stock cf hood!!!

Seibon's shit is always quality.

I would say all of those companys by my standards are barely good enough, but far from being great in fitment and quality. They have waves and typically the gaps are off a lot sometimes even though nothing will be perfect.

And you forgot to add an actual poll. PM a mod to get it fixed if you don't want this locked.

i can't comment on any other brands, but the ViS carbon fiber hoods aren't 100% cf. in fact, they're just a thin layer of cf layed over an entirely fiberglass hood.

true story.

ok, so what other companies would have a better quality stock replacement cf hood? cuz i'm really looking for top quality. i don't want to play around with fitment, nor do i want the hood to fade. i'm also looking for an actual cf hood, not just a fiberglass one with a layer over it...

as for the poll, for some reason i couldn't add one when i made the post, but a pm'ed a mod about it, so i should get fixed.

thanks

Well for a good one, expect to pay a pretty penny. I just bought my Yashio Factory for $1000 and if you want the best hood you'd probably have to talk to kognition for one of their dry carbon hoods.

Although I am an agreement with the companies listed, I will have to differ in regards to the order.

1. Kognition
2. DMax
3. Origin

What if you're looking for a hood without a nasty vent on it?

What if you're looking for a hood without a nasty vent on it?

thats exactly it!! lol... i see a bunch of ppl didn't read the part about me wanting a stock replacement cf hood. so that leaves dmax out, and a couple others as well. and as far as kognition, their hoods look amazing, however dry carbon is really expensive and 1500$ for a hood is a bit more then i'd like to pay...

The majority of the seibon hoods I've seen (including my own) are pretty decent. My fit was dead on and my friend's has very minimal gap. Some parts are wavy though. Seibon much like many other carbon fiber hood manufactures do not make full carbon fiber hoods. They have a FRP skeleton with only the top portion being carbon fiber.

If I had the cash to blow I'd like a kognition hood for my s13, but that's not gonna happen. Out of the three mentioned I'd go with the Seibon products just because of the experience I've had with the products. Pretty good for the price, but don't expect perfection.

1. Kognition
2. DMax
3. Origin

I would love to get a hood from either of these three.. But Kognition design is the goal. But didnt he stop makin hoods? I would pay the 1500 for a hood.. Long as its solid carbon. And vents can look good depending on how they are laid out.

Ya gotta pay for QUALITY! buy what ya want, but i say the quality is worth the $. Especially when tenths, hundredths, or even thousandths of a second count. That quality part probably will get you the edge over the knockoff.

kognition

My hoods are $1,000.
I think $1,500 is a little steep. The difference being that they are made with epoxy and not vinylester or polyester resin, which shrink and have a lower density. Dry carbon using epoxy will never fade on you. And you can also take it to a body shop for a REAL clearcoat if you want the three dimensional effect. And it is a stock hood, (s14 kouki).

Am I the only one that dislikes the look of a CF hood? I mean, I'm all for weight savings and whatnot but I'd rather have it paint-matched. I think it looks good on say, a charcoal grey car. But I'm just a hater

Nope, I'm right there with ya.

If my car weren't flat black, I'd have it painted body-color. Trunk too =P

I think having a Kognition hood would be too baller for my car, I'd have to scratch it up or something lol. If you want an OEM-style, Kognition would be awesome.

For vents, I think Garage Saurus takes the cake. Dmax would be a close 2nd for me.

the vis hood that i had was golden. great fitment, light as fuck, i really liked the style of the vent. there was nothing i didn't like about it. (and it was about 1/2 the cost of a seibon).

I'd go D-Max. I've had friends that are satisfied with them and they look like great quality.

From your choices though. I'd pick Seibon

MadScientist
03-15-2009, 08:16 PM
that list is all crap... pick one the results are the same... they are all Fiberglass hoods that have a single visual layer of Carbon.

D-Max is great... awsome prices, US stock... Japan made.

I personally have a Garage-S... super light weight.

Poly is weaker, but UV additives are available... if the company uses it.
Epoxy is stronger, but no UV additives... however automotive UV clear coating is just fine.

there really is not alot of quality carbon fiber products out there , cause they r mass produced products ..i just bought a vented vis carbon kouki hood ..just because of the vent and the weight..
i had 2 wet sand and re-clear it for it too look half decent ..fitment is
booty but its light and vented..cf trunks and lip spoilers are a waste of money imo..

I've heard that VIS is Seibon's "failed QA" brand.

I've had 2 Seibon's, both Zenki and Kouki stock style and they've held up nice, very few noticeable blemishes in he weave. Would LOVE to have Kognition or Origin, but good lord that's alot for a hood either way. We'll see what the future holds, I'd love to have a super high quality hood.

My hood flew up and annhialated itself so I got a Seibon OEM Style (S15 Hood.) brand new off of eBay for like $520 shipped IIRC.

Fitment was OEM and I absolutely love it. It's very light and it looks great IMO.

Personally, I don't dig the whole carbon fiber thing. Yeah there are advantages, but the majority of people with carbon fiber body panels don't own racecars. Race inspired cosmetic enhancement imo. Its just more accepted.

"but i wanna lose weight!" Ok... So you can go 0-60 in 7.1 seconds instead of 7.2?

now, if you have a car you track, more power to you. I know how 100 lbs can mean the difference between 1st and 3rd.

Ive had an ebay, a vis, and a seibon. Ebay was the lightest, fitment was second best, durability the worst. Faded quick. Seibon fit the best, looked the best, and lasted. Vis had shitty fitment, and I didnt keep it long enough to test how long it'd keep from fading. Had the seibon for two years, non-garage-kept car (aka sat in the sun all day every day) and didnt fade. Wax it, and it wont fade.

Id go with Seibon.

I say Dmax, or URAS.
dmax has a raise in the center of the hood near the windshield, which gives a sexy look. and quality is very good,

come on now. Have you seen the test? Run a car over all these hoods, only Seibon survive the test.
The lowest you should go is Seibon, otherwise dry carbon but that costs you $1000.

Hmmmmm...I vote D-Max. But as for fitment, seems like the Zenki hoods have a gap on the passenger side headlight. And having the aftermarket headlight covers leave an even more gap.

I like Seibon Carbon because they stand behind their crap... My hood is 3 yrs old, and started fallin apart for what ever reason, I called them, and they said that there is only a 6 month warranty, but send them pics. I did and like 1 week later they gave me a new one for 50%. I say Seibon all they way!
