well, i'm going to set you guys up. my dad stumbled on a 82' 280z w/ T-tops, new jet black paint, new clutch, new pressure plate, new exhaust, new rims, no dents, no rust, 160k miles, runs great, almost perfect interior...all that for $1,200. i think its a damn good buy, but i don't know if i need another car. i want it, but i don't know what kind of performance it has, and how it compares to my 240. i'ma keep the 240 for sure, but you guys think that the 280 is a true sports car contender for me to own? (oh yeah, i'm sorry if i posted this in the wrong place...i just thought that it deals with the 240. move it where it needs to be. sorry)

I'd look at it more like a collector's car... It won't be the quickest (if it's not turbo) and you might not find parts easily for this car, but it's a part of the Z heritage in North America. I would buy one anyday. :)

If its a 82' then its a 280ZX. I would buy one but it sounds like you allready have a car. Personally If I was getting an older Z I would hold out for a early model 240Z.

In 82' the 280ZX n/a had 145 HP all other years had 135 HP I believe.
Turbo models have 180 HP and the engine code is L28E(T)

I'd prolly go for it if it's in as good a condition as you say. . . I'd love a pre-300 z car.

Anybody know the curb weight of the 280zx? I know they tended to get fatter and fatter after the 240z

There is a 240z up the street from me. I don't know how long it's been parked there. My dad said when I sell my RX7 I can buy that for a project car. A little motivation for me. It is a really neat car. But I also like the looks of the long nose 280z's. Nissan and Toyota's sports car heritage from the 60's and 70's is great.

The 280 is a great car. I think that every S-chassis enthusiast would want one sitting in front of their driveway. You should go for it, the price sounds great for what you get. You won't find them much cheaper, guaranteed. Good luck!

Yeah...Z cars are really nice. I love my 280ZX that I still have...even though I took it under a Tahoe. Z Cars are probobly the best project car ever made. You can put in an RX7 motor, Supra Motor, 300ZX motor, Silvia motor, Skyline motor, and the most common, Chevy small blocks and Ford Small blocks. It's a very universal car. I was goin to install a chevy small block into mine, LS1, but I just don't have the money to get it done, and I'm goin to school and all. But yeah...you should get the Z if you wanna have a nice project car, or just a nice Daily Driver.
