Short video I threw together for Forrest. We went out to the track on monday after FD Vegas to test out the car and so I could get a chance to test out my new camera.
Kept it short and sweet. Realistically, there's not much you can do with 1 driver on balcony in a video.
http://vimeo.com/1367470
Still super bummed I couldn't make it out to all star bash (Didn't get my new camera in time) But I'll be out at the next one and the top drifts also.
Thanks for watching. Expect more soon.

haha, tracking shots are awesome! I've been dying to do them for a long time, but never had a truck to drive me through the course.
Were you out at the 626 event? I believe thats what it was. We were there the day after and the lot was filled with zipties and random pieces of kits all over the place.
The camera is a Panasonic DVX100b
I would really like to team up with all the video guys on the west coast for some super epic video at willow. What would be sick is some crane shots on horse thief!
Thanks for all the feedback guys!

DVX100B,
cool. i used to own the DVX100 a few years back. the one that you had to manual focus in 24P mode. good camera thoough, i loved it. Sold it to buy my NIKON D200.
Yeah, CHOMPZ and SQUIDD shoot most of the video stuff for the 626DRIFT guys. But i am sure they would love some more angles and footage from a quality camera if you ever come out.
Crane?? , lol. Now we are talking money!! Even with the favors I could pull. It would still be over a grand to have a 15' jib arm out there with full remote head. Plus we would need a put-put generator to power the monitors and the arm. AND, gas money to have one of the guys I know bring there gear up there.
Same for bringing a steady cam operator out. i even can get us a hostess tray. (the table that mounts to the side of the window, like they use in movies). Or probably a hood mount even.
Maybe if a large enough event happens one day :)
Here is a link to the VRT TV page.

click on videos, i like #3, cause Im in it alot. the blue car. lol
S14Josh
07-19-2008, 02:53 PM
You can pick up a kessler crane for about 500 bucks or so, its only an 8 foot jib arm though, but it would still add for some awesome shots. And maybe not a TRUE steadicam, but a glidecam would do wonders.
But yeah dude, maybe i'll come out to the next 626 event and we can get some huge collabo thing going. I'm always up for more projects!

how bout you mount the crane in the back of the truck for really smooth and dynamic shots? :)
Of course, cranes on trucks can break. thats one of the many reasons i walked from that movie "RedLine". they wanted me to mount the 15' crane on the back of the flat bed while chaseing the cars around the track. I was like, are you guys fucking retarded?? The only thing that holds lateral pressure is a 3/4 " bolt. One quik brake or turn and that thing is snapping, taking the crane off the back of the truck, and anyone with it!!! lol
The cheap Jimmy Jib things are not to bad to rent from wooden nickel. Dont think they got a remote head though.

just watched it. pure awesome on your part josh.
forrest's car used to be my favorite s14 and is now my favorite s14.5. that car is a sexy time explosion.
and to you guys talking about cranes, i am not sure if it is the same idea but if you are just trying to have a stationary shooting tower couldn't you set up some scaffolding. it might be a little more work to setup (its not too bad if you know what you are doing) but probably easier to borrow and cheaper than renting a crane. just an idea.

I'm pretty sure when they're talking about a crane, they're talking about an extending arm that you mount the camera on the end of, and the real expensive ones have this remote control pivoting contraption that lets the person using the crane turn the camera around 360 degrees, and up and down, with a joystick.
That way, they can be off of the track, but get real close and personal to cars without being in harms way.
If you've seen the D1GP's footages, you'll see some of the shots captured by the cranes. Those shots seem like they're right on top of the car, or at least very close to the cars.

thats what we have been discussing. cause a tripod isnt gonna help. It would actullly be better to be holding it handheld so your arms can work as "shocks" for your camera.
A crane or steady cam would absorb the bounceing of the car that you are riding in. And a hostess tray or hood mount would pix the camera onto the drift car, so it wouldnt shake.
I think you actually did a great job with keeping it steady, espeacially zoomed in. It aint easy. i think that not everyone is ready for that kind of dynamic filming in motorsports. Skateboardings been doing the rolling long lens for ever now. Its basically an adeptation of the zoom in they did in JAWS. And NASCAR is now using the tracking camera's they started using a few olympics ago for track n field and ice skateing. Everyone is using the color saturation and vinettes that BBC and WRC has been using for YEARS.
So the motor sports community is getting used to non traditional coverage, It just takes some time to get everyone on board.:ghey::blah::blah:

The only reason i wanted the truck was to keep pace with the car as it's initiating and passing through the ring. In order to do that on a board I'd have to be going well over 30 to keep up and make it to the ring safely.
The thing with balcony is the starting lane to the ring is such a long stretch its pretty hard to pull it off with a board without getting trashed, plus it's not exactly the smoothest surface in the world, so maintaining speed isn't really achievable. The only reason I know this, is because I tried it and got caught up on a rock and almost ate shit with my camera in my hands...which would have sucked.
But I'm actually a huge fan of the T2 films board shots. Those shots are amazing.
But we've actually got some ideas floating around as far as what were going to be building for camera rigs. My neighbor has a fabrication shop, and also works for a production rental warehouse, so were going to be building set-ups for a dedicated chase truck and other rigs like jib arms and all that.
The next thing i'm going to be setting up is a cheap hand held type jib-arm like they used in fully flared

I have a bogen tripod for my still cam. with everything extended, I can get about 10' out of it. then i use my remote shutter release. I think this trick is better for slow motion shots though.
You cant get motion blur with the still shots like this, so it doesnt translate the "feel".
The only way to do anything that wont be copied is to do something someone wont. So you have to start risking your equiptment. :(

T2 was actually going to do some filming for Forrest/Geoff, but since his car was illegal for FD never happened.
ANd yea the boarding thing is hard at some tracks and some corners. We did a little bit of the trailing in a car thing as well at the same event the video above was filmed. He hasnt finished editing some of his stuff though, got a lot of cool footage.
I am glad to see so much new stuff in filming drifting though, shit is so boring to watch usually...
