I'll send a text if I'm out a restaurant and I don't want to be rude and make a call in front of the people I'm with.

Similarly there are a few people I know who text a lot and if I call and there is no answer or I know they're not able to answer their phone I'll leave a text instead of a voice mail.

aside from that I HATE texting, if someone texts me and needs more than a yes/no response they're getting a call back, If I need to ask someone something they're getting a call.

seriously, texting is wonderful for leaving messages because it takes about half a sec to check a text whereas with voicemail it takes 5-10 min if you have a lot, which i always do, because it is such a hassle to check them.

I love having text, since I can't always be on the phone. It's wonderful to answer texts at my convenience, instead of listening to mindless chatter on the phone.

That and, I never really liked talking on the phone.
