Does the rough part you are talking about circle the top of every cylinder? If that's the case, it's just 'ring ridge'. If you wanna be cheap, you could get rid of it with a reamer. Idk though, that's something you may wanna have a machine shop check out. It would suck if you got rid of the ring ridge, put it all back together and then found out there was a bigger problem.

ok so you scrape the top of all that mess smooth. Meaning remove the ring edge to make it all smooth again, then you take a drill with a hone tip to hone out the cylinder walls. replace gaskets, re-assemble, congrats you are finished.

Now seriously tho, i would have a machine shop inspect it for you and let you know if its worth repairing. It looks like it can be repaired from the pics. But again someone needs to look at it in person at a machine shop to make the official decision.

Good luck man.

Its the small area of the cylinder up top that the rings never touch, so the lower areas of the cylinder feel like it's recessed compared to that one tiny area of the cylinder. It's common sense. Just take a minute to think about why a ring ridge would occur over time.

I'd have to agree with this as well. Most machine shops wouldnt charge much for taking a look at it.

That is called "Crevice errosion", and its common on the SR engines.
This is happening because the top of the cylinder (about 1 mm thick) is not STEEL as the rest of the cylinder, but Aluminium, like the block.

This aluminium edge gets erroded over time, as its a soft material compared to the rest of the cylinder.
Using a to large ID head gasket, can lead to this over time, as well.

A 0.5mm over bore/hone should clean this pretty well.
If you need a resurface, it will take care of the rest, although that whole area is not in a critical place.

It should be smoothed out hoever, not to cause hot spots that could lead to detonation.

Defently a savable block.

Going for sleeves over something similiar, was a big mistake i made at the time.
