I am not able to answer your question because you do not describe the invention in adequate detail.

OBD-II specifies a 16-pin J1962 female connector. OBD-I is not standardized.

Which way is the conversion going? Are you trying to hook up an OBD-II scan tool into an OBD-I port? Are you trying to hook up an OBD-I proprietary tool into an OBD-II port? Are you swapping ECUs?

What are you trying to do?

A quick search on Google Patents will satisfy most of your curiosity.

As far as finding a patent on the subject matter, what are you trying to do? Are you trying to seek patent protection for yourself? Are you afraid of infringement suit? What are you trying to do?

If your friend is trying to get a patent, you've just published his invention to the entire world and will likely bar his patent application.

You did not answer any of my questions above.

I don't think we can help you with your question, at least not on a public forum.

Please search on Google Patents. There will be other non-patent resources as well so if you want a glimpse of the state of the art you will want to start there as well.

If you have any specific question feel free to PM me. Otherwise I don't think you should disclose your friend's client's invention.
