View Full Version : Power Steering Fittings Leaking

Here's the picture of the old fitting and the new fitting on the return line (16mm one)
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l168/2iv0sx/IMG00308.jpg
as you can see, the old fitting is way longer than the newer fitting for the AN line so it's not sealing and then it leaks. We've tried using an oring next to the crush washer and it still leaks. The local AN fitting store (baker precision) is closed today and we need it to stop leaking now. Will thread sealant work on this? I'm looking at the permatex 59214 high temp thread sealant.....need your help asap

I dont know how well it will work, but have you tried Teflon tape?

Have you tried it without the copper washer? I don't think i used one on the pump either, but i could be wrong. I used the Russell anti-seize thread sealant for sure. It was part of the assembly lube/sealant kit.

We tried it with copper washer only, with copper and o-ring, with o-ring only, basically every pattern.
Right now, it's on it with the permatex thread sealer only curing overnight. See how it goes tomorrow or monday.
Everything else is fine, high pressure fittings on pump and rack, no leaks at all. It's just the return line fitting that's leaking.

Mine uses those rubber o-rings and no leakage at all. Try replacing the o-rings with new ones. they sell them at ace hardware i think

Alright, here's a lil update about the leak but got another issue!
The sealant all cured and seem to solve the leaking problem I had with the fitting at the rack. AND now, after driving for less than a few hours, the HIGH PRESSURE PS line blew off the hose end at the rack?! I don't understand...
Steel fitting adapters
Aluminum hose ends
SS Lines (- 6 AN) Too small??
Here are pictures to see exacting what I'm taking about.
(In this picture, you can see the high pressure line popped off the hose end)

(Picture of fitting/adapter to pump) Everything seems to be good here...

Hey dude
It looks like you used a make-it-yourself type 1000psi rated setup (like I did for the low pressure line with summit stuff). Those aren't strong enough to hold the higher pressure, which can hit upwards of 1500psi. You can buy higher grade line and fittings from places like summit, but then you have to have someone put it together for you (it's compression fittings). Like I said in my PM, your best bet is finding an AEROQUIP retailer for the high pressure stuff, as they can make you a 4000psi line for under $40.
Also I think combining steel fittings and aluminum ends might be trouble, as in seizing.

you need to use the Blue hose from earls like we use in our lines. it and the fittings to go with it are for much higher pressure. Im sure other companies make a similar hose also.

Exactly what Brian W. said
A local shop can make them with the correct blue hose and fittings. If anyone wants one, I will sell one for $80 shipped.

The hose.. that's what I was thinking after this happened
I'll be heading to a shop for the supplies and see what they can do for me.
Thanks for the input guys.

So much for stock engineering.. Got me doing this in the first place :tweak:
Seems like I just got the wrong part that's all.

Exactly! Use power steering specific hose and hose ends. I used the Aeroquip Teflon lined hose (http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+400274+4294923289+115+300165&autoview=sku). Just because of the burst rating.W/ Russell Powerflex Power Steering Hose Ends.
Yeah, I mixed Russell with Aeroquip!

Picking up Earl's BLUE p/s hose and the proper hose ends this weekend
With that said, you guys don't have any problems during full lock or anything? since I believe that's when the pressure builds. I just don't want to worry about anything else happening..

My high pressure hose actually has a leak in it as well. I bought the Earl's PS line, but do I need anything else to get it on?

Take a look at the link and note the proper high pressure power steering fittings. I used these on my RB but should be the same ish for SR/KA. All your fittings and hoses are wrong which is like previously stated, most likely the reason your lines popped

Hah, same thing happened to me. made a custom high pressure line with jegs fittings, leaking like crazy now.
Probably just gonna order MA motorsports line and use this one as a low pressure.

10/11/2011 Bump because it's leaking AGAIN!
High pressure hose fitting is the one starting to leak again..
All fittings are tight. Using Earls high pressure (blue) hose and fittings
Any ideas? Circled in red

I'm going to give these Stat-O-Seals a try on that fitting. The size for the rack fitting is 14mmx1.5 correct?

Does anyone know where i can find a fitting adapter thats the same length as the OEM?!
The problem is that the new fitting isnt mating (not long enough) with the rack which is causing for it to leak from the beginning. No oring or crush washer is going to help.
As you can see from the comparsion

i would try this one:
Flaming River FRM14X6AN - Flaming River Power Steering Adapter Fittings - Overview - SummitRacing.com (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FLA-FRM14X6AN/)
the fitting is supposed to seal with the o-ring on the front, not the thread itself or any washers. i think your fitting is simply too short, so the o-ring doesnt make contact with the rack on the inside. the one from summit appears to be a little bit longer than yours.
edit:
heres another one that should do the trick... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FRA-491962/

^Yes those look longer than what I have. The brass one looks right. Thanks Firestorm for the link
I'm going to give these fittings a try and will update what happens...

Can someone confirm the fitting adapter size for those two on the rack? I forgot what they were when I did this few years back
I searched and getting different answers.. 12mmx1.0? 14mmx1.5? 16mmx1.5?

what happened to this?
I'm guessing the posts went away b/c the problem was fixed?
sry for the ancient thread bump but I see the same issue with the current isis fittings.

Well I'd just like to say, my line, fittings and hose ends are still going strong! Just think I haven't even touched that line in like 4years! yay!
Try some of the fixes listed in the thread or call the manufacturer!

I just contacted both All Star and Flaming River. Both are too short to reach the bottom of the rack on the high pressure side. All Star is .740" and the Flaming River fitting is .840". OEM is .969".

This is correct. None of the new fittings I bought were long enough and stat o seals weren't working.
Sorry for the very late reply but I did get the leak to stop! and still no leaking issues as of today.
I used this thread sealant and applied it on the fitting

I went through this same thing a couple years ago when i made a Russell PS line. There are no o-ring fittings long enough to seal the rack.
I tried sealants, washers, o rings, etc. All it took was some teflon tape. Just use a non o-ring fitting, teflon tape, and a crush washer for good measure. boom

My isis hi pressure replacement hose would leak at the rack when it was first installed. I ended up using the special sealant they use on speed bleeders and it hasnt leaked since. At least not from there cause my rack now gushes fluid from the seals hah.
