my old ka had bad knock and i picked up a low mileage one from a guy in town. i had the head machined, put a nwe gasket in, the chain installed properly, and i also took the oil pump out and reinstalled the shaft that drives the distributor (half moon pointing to 12 and 6 o clock correct?)
anyway, it fires up and i have to feather it about half way to the floor to keep it alive, and its very rough. it runs best with the distributor turned almost all the way to the left....
i also tried different plugs..
any ideas why its so rough

im not sure how else i would have installed the distributor, other than 180 degrees off, but would it even run?
and i have had the front cover off a couple times and the timing chain ir fine still

One tooth off on the dizzy and it'll run...sounds like your problem.
Pull the distributor, reinstall, try it again.

there is a dot on the shaft and a dot on the oil pump. line the dots up and re install. i had that issue. do you have the fsm??

does it sound like its not running on all 4 cylinders at idle? you may want to check your TPS, make sure your injectors are working and have good connections also...

timing is off..... restick the dizzy... check ur timing marks on the cams make sure they line up with the chain.... sounds like ur timing is retarded... need to advance it...
make sure the oil pump is installed correctly.... and when u stick the dizzy make sure its dead on #1..

sxrb how much did it cost you in total to do all that?
im doing the same thing to my motor right now

$120 for motor
$50 for head machining
$80 for allgsakets and seals, and head bolts.
not too bad...
the engine runs now, i had a bad injector connection and wrong firing order.....haha.
anyway the idle is kind of rough. im dead on 15 degrees.
any rpm above 1500 ir great, smoooooth. every once in a while my idle will be perfect, buy usually bounces roughly around 750-1000. i have a new fuel filter, plugs, and wires. any ideas?

ok the car randomly idled correctly for about 5 minutes yesterday and then went back to bouncly rpm's. a friend told me to clean out the iac and give it a shot.
anyone ever have a dirty iac that did the trick?
