checking out a 91 240 that was smashed in the front and rear, been sitting there for probably over 5 years with the hood off. The motor looked clean and intact at first sight, 124k miles on it and Im thinking it would maybe a good backup motor when I go ka-t. I tried getting it to turn over, but the starter was gone, so I turned the motor over at the crank with a ratchet and it spun pretty well free with no sign of compression. I believe all the plugs were in, and the distributer was turning so the timing chain was intact. Wouldnt there still be compression in some cylinders almost no matter how the motor was blown? It looks like an unmolested KA ripe for the picking, it even has clean oil and a nissan oil filter! I dont know how someone wrecked it and blew it up at the same time. Any ideas on why theres no sign of compression? Im thinking about getting it just to rebuild with forged parts but I would at least like to know whats wrong with it, maybe Ill tear it apart in the car when I go back up.

maybe the rings are stuck or dry or the spark plugs are gone. Was the head bolted down correctly? just a wild guess but maybe someone have loosen the head at the junk yard.... did u take off the valve cover?

valve cover was on, all the plug wires were on and some plugs were in but I dont know for sure we checked every plug. I doubt any were missing honestly. The maf, starter, and PS pump were the only missing things under the hood. There were no signs of anyone fucking with the motor itself.

there was water in every spark plug hole so I can almost guarantee the plugs are all in.

How much do you have to spend to obtain it, givem a $100 then if it runs or not you will have a ka24de rebuidable ftw. GL
As said above p-rings probably stuck letting comp bypass

it would cost me $240, they might negotiate if it was a blown motor, but maybe not. I might check out another yard tomorrow, I don't expect to find anything though.

Seriously you don't see a complete KA motor in the junkyard everyday around here. That motor isn't going anywhere fast since that yard is only open one day a week, so I'll just keep it in mind for now. I would like to get a motor though, and making lots of junk yard trips adds up in cost eventually.

the motor won't run. did you read?
i'm with the majority. + $200 for a suspicious KA is too much dude.

thats too much for a suspicious old ka.
i bought the running ka in my car for $80 and just bought another good ka to build for $50. i'm guessing the deals just aren't out there.
$240? junkyards here charge $98 +tax.

thanks for the help everyone. I'll check around for a running motor and do what I have to do, just see what happens I guess. The only thing close to a decent price will be a u-pull-it yard, and there are only so many in the area.

Rings sometimes "lie down" if a motor stands for ages like that. I see it on import motors here all the time. Once there is some load on the engine the rings push back out and you'll see compression.
Given what you've said about the motor being in good nick and good oil etc I would buy it if I were you. The motor is there cause the car was wrecked right, so the motor should be okay imo.

If I dripped a little oil in the spark plug holes it should seal up the rings right? I don't know if that would help me much, but I guess it could rule out headgasket and valve problems right?
I just got back from another yard over an hour away with not much luck. They had one 240 out of probably 1000 imports, the motor was pretty stripped and exposed with no valve cover or distributer. There wasn't a guage cluster to read the miles anyway so I just walked from that one. I talked to a guy pulling parts from it, I guess there had been a 95 s14 sitting in the running motor section a few weeks ago, it didn't last long. I did pick up a few sets of altima efans so it was worth the trip.
