Why is the SR20DET illegal? Or, is it? I may be wrong, but haven't there been a few cars in the US with SR motors? Not neccesarily the SR20DET, but still...

That just answered your question. Sure, there were FWD sr20de engines in American cars, but never a RWD sr20det.

No, the question was why and if the SR20DET was illegal.

jeff is right, you still answered you own question
not legal because never in USA cars (no DOT approval)
and if it will be: no never, its a DEAD engine. not in production anymore. no reason to DOT approve it. 240sx is DEAD. SR20DET is DEAD.

Since I apparently was a bit unclear (after reading my original post I wasn't sure what I was asking) Since I had already done a search, and come up with a of answers that all amounted to NO, SR20DET's are all illegal, always will be and so on, apparently this applies to all imported motors. However, this is not the case, Motorex has managed to import a number of street legal Skylines, granted they're expensive, but Luxury tax is a beast. So, why? Why can these skylines be street legal yet no one seems to believe that an SR can be as well?

im not mean. i'm just super straight forward. if i was in the big brother program i'd be the drill seargent type. give the kid straight up facts. people cant get the point that our cars are dead, in japan and USA. dead cars mean=no need for legalization of any kind. SR20DET glory days are over prepare for the next wave..you can see that already with the VQ in R34s (like top secret) and the mass of aftermarket products ALREADY availalbe for the z33
until people understand that the SR is ILLEGAL in EVERY STATE of the USA, will be raggin on people and giving them crap. think of it as my mission statement..i do it for...the kids. yeah. for that kid out there with a dream..a dream to drive an SR powered 240sx. yeah.....yeah.
but..too bad his car is dead as well as the engine (out of production).

Guys... you're allowed to have attitude... you just can't go off and start namecalling or mud-slinging. Nobody is out of line.
About Motorex. The price isn't luxury tax that you are paying. You are paying for the 6-10 Skylines that Motorex crashed to get DOT approval on crashworthyness. You can get a sr20det legalized, but it would cost you over $10k in testing and all.

Not to mention that most people would not pay the higher prices for the 'legal' engines.

Crash testing a car makes sense, but how would you crash test an engine? Not to be a smart ass or anything, but does anyone here really know enough of the law to say with any authority that there is/isn't a way to make one legal or how?

Do a search on FA for the answer to this. Someone wanted to legalize a s15 motor.
Im pretty sure that it boiled down to getting a certification guy to spend time with you, to do the couple weeks worth of smog testing, the fees for all that, paperwork, and a couple other things. It's really not worth it.

Jeff- I searched FA, and while I couldn't find what you were talking about, I did find a bunch of stuff about Motorex working on a CARB legal sr. Anybody know what ever happened with that?

This is the only reason im relunctant to do an sr swap or any swap. I live in california, i think CA is the most strict on these type of things. I know where and how to get the swap done, its just what if i get pulled over for whatever reason? The COP looks at my engine(or realizes its illegal) and sends me to the Ref or whatever they call it?
Does anyone have any experience in these types of things? I live in san diego and their really cutting down on illegal racing (witch i wont be doing), but the cops see a modded car and think it is or has been. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/unhappy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':unhappy:'>

they do crash testing because the engine is in the car AND the car is ALSO not DOT approved. i think the way they make teh skyline legal is they "water it down" as for the CA thing. hey its not that bad, up in portland to get smog they have to take it to a place where its run by the state, whereas in CA u can take it to a gas station.

I think you could stick as many cats as you want and it'll pass emissions but it won't pass visual. Or from what I heard.
Dousan_PG

it will pass emmission stock setup w/ all the emmssion control things set up and you are running the cat. you'll pass. i've asked various SR importers and businesses (in so cali) abut this. you WONT pass visual..so if your state doesnt have a visual test, and you want a stock SR in your car, and you wire everything up properly and such, you'll pass tailpipe.
