hey guys..

One of my pet peeves is dirty old hardware. i know... its stupid, and i could very well invest my money into something more meaningful (as far as the car goes..) but i don't care.

Instead of paying a fortune for oem plated hardware, I was thinking about switching some of it to chrome/satin finished allen bolts (normal or button head). Nothing seriously load bearing, just hardware for brackets, etc.

I've poked around for about an hour... found a lot of places that sell it for motorcycles (which are usually specific for a certain model, engine, etc.), but nothing like a "universal metric kit" ... anyone have any leads? posi rep for those who contribute something worth looking into:)

thanks in advance

you can buy hardware kits at autozone. maybe lowes or home depot has something decent.

You could also look into Fastenal, they carry a large array of fasteners and if they don't have it, they can always order it. Last time I order stuff from them they had it in the next day.

what about...

http://www.mcmaster.com/

i remember looking at that crazy rebuild that "Petrol" did...he's in the uk and this dude went crazy. he completely restored his S14.

he used some crazy ass chemicals and replated his old hardware.

i'm sure you can find some way to plate it yourself with the right combination of chemicals and electricity.

i say you zinc plate your hardware. but that's just me.

yeah i read his entire thread of that s14 resto. Guy was amazing when it came to detail. ...and prob had a severe case of OCD.

yeah i love the look on zinc plating, but i'd rather just buy a nice little kit, then have to go through the process of plating them. If i were restoring the car such as was done on that s14... maybe i'd consider it.

mcmaster sells everything you can imagine, only problem is cost. If you know exactly what you want in terms of a complete description i suggest you contacting fastner service. its about 50% cheaper than McMaster

I'd use McMaster to narrow down the exact description and information including grade of the bolt, since their website is so great

the S13 restoration:
http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=209248

the S14 restoration:
http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=283826

the S13 restoration was more involved (fixing rust holes and what not), but the S14 restoration was more ridiculous (replating EVERY last bolt and bracket).

The guy is crazy you'd see something and think "what's wrong with that, it looks clean to me" and then he'd sand bast treat and repaint the whole thing.

when he was done the S14 was in better condition than when it shipped from Nissan new... I have no doubt.

BTW... thanks for creating this topic burnsauto, this is something I've always wanted to know myself I'll definitly be watching this topic to help beautify my engine bay :D
