View Full Version : Upgraded Brake Systems
Im confusing myself a little with all this information.. so Im going to post what I know and see what I can do to clear things up. As of right now Im starting from a stock S13 with 4 bolt hubs. Its going to be pretty much a dedicated track car and I want a brake system that I wont need to worry about so Id rather overkill then have a failing/fading system when I need it the most.
The easiest way I see converting to 5 lug is using a kit for the front (such as Attains or other) and Z32 for the rear. Doing such a thing is going to mess with why type of "brake kit" I could find. But even more confusing is most of these kits are only front brakes. Do people honestly keep the rears stock (or upgraded to Z32 in most cases) and keep going larger for the front? Doesnt that throw off the bias Dramatically?

balances is better then overkill.
I've been doing fine with z32 front and rear, track pads, and 1 piece rotors.
The only way i would keep the stock rears would be if i only did the q45 fronts.
what type of driving will you be doing?
For the most part Im building it into a "track car". Time attack mostly, maybe once and awhile road events. I want to keep it street legal though just for the hell of it but in my mind street performance has been secondary so far.
And when I said overkill.. I meant within it being balanced. Being even if the brake system can lock up all four tires at any given time.. its better then them fadding and not stopping the car in time.

^I agree. I also have the q45 up front with the stock rear on my s13. it's a great upgrade so far though i don't do events.
If it was just going to be a street car I would be happy with the Z32 brakes... but its not. Its the only reason Im asking this too. Id rather spend the money and get something that wont give me problems or slow me down on a track.

Thanks for the link.. though I wont be buying a brake system soon, still got a lot of other work to do on the car. But even that doesnt help me much, its just larger brakes for the front which I could find anywhere... The question is more what do people do about the rear while upgrading the front to something better then the Z32s?
Hah another idea... 350Z upgraded brakes. Considering the Brembo ones bolt onto the S14 hubs by drilling them out slightly, so any upgrade kit that bolt onto the 350Z should work too. Still dont know about the read though.. considering all anyone talks about is the front.

The reason why I believe companies dont make rear bbk is because of the e-brake. The 240 uses a cable to pull on the caliper while the z32 uses a drum type setup. Get the z32 e-brake assembly and get a rear brake for a z32.
Think I found some.

Though for the 350Z brakes Im still having a hard time finding anything about the rear, but ones from the first link make Z brakes worthless.

Thats just it, in every kit I looked for I couldnt find anything about the rears, just fronts.

Yes but fact is the Z32 rear brake caliper is actually not larger than the our stock rears. If your using a z32 26mm front you can achieve balance.
Fact is for years people ran the stock rears with Z32 fronts and achieved no balance issues. You upgrade to the larger master to take care of that.
Well... I guess that one I linked for the 240SX (which I actually found on the forum after searching for two days) or using a 350Z setup would be the best shot if I want all around track brakes. Thanks everyone.

The calipers not an issue, its the rotor that really matters.
Here's the picture I took of the difference between the S13 rear and the Z32 rear just to give some reference on how much more thermal mass your getting here. FWIW, I did start out with the Z32's up front and stock rear. After the first track day I found that the rears weren't doing enough and were baking... switching to the Z32 rears brought the rotor temps down by 200F.

As for the OP, I'd start with the full Z32 setup and if you feel that you need more rotor up front, then go with the Z33 track edition rotors and adapter brackets... I did this recently and found the setup works quite well. I still need to get in a few more track days, but overall it's working and at a fraction of the cost of other BBK kits out there.
I found a seller on ebay selling the Z33 track edition rotors for $110 shipped and picked up the adapter bracket off a forum member for $70 shipped.

A comparison of the Z33 to the Z32 rotor.

The only draw back to this setup is that the pad hangs over the rotor some due to the bracket design, so you loose some of the swept area, but that didn't seem to affect the braking, even on track.
