I want to set the coilovers at the maximum highest ride height as a starting point before lowering to the ideal height.

What is the fewest number of turns of the McPherson bracket (or standard strut bracket for the rear) into the cylinder would you be comfortable with?

EDIT: Insert the cylinder into the bracket until the bottom of the cylinder can bee seen through the sighthole on the bracket.

If there's no sighthole, insert a length of at least the diameter of the cylinder into the cylinder, or until the threads run out, whichever is less.

Bump to answer my own question.

Straight from BC Racing, which manufactures Megan, Apex'i, and probably many other brands as well.

In case the pix disappears from their site, the minimum thread length is 80mm for a McPherson bracket and 30mm for a standard bracket.

To be safe, I would thread the cylinder into the bracket until there is no more thread left. This way, I know that this the most contact that the bracket can ever make with the cylinder and it would be safer.
