I've got a question for all of you SR buffs...

Is it possible to put a 98 180sx blacktop sr20det into an s13 coupe? If it's possible, (which I think it is) do any of you have this set up or know anyone with it?

The reason I ask is because the engine I really want is a red-top...I know these have more power "potential" but the newest red-tops available are from 94 (I would like a newer engine than that). The blacktops in the 98 180sx have the same mechanical make-up as these red-tops but can be obtained with four less years on them.

sorry for the rambling, so basically, I want to put a 98 180sx sr20det into a 94 240sx coupe. Can I?

It's been 40 minutes without an answer, so I, with no SR knowledge will attept.
I think the 180sx engines are s13 blacktops. You won't be able to specify year or mileage when ordering, so '98 is a mabey. It would be an s13 blacktop of any year they made them.
Also... they can be mounted in 240sx's just as easily as any other s13 sr motor. I don't know why it would have more "potential," other than possibly newer parts that seal better. I am kinda sure they are the same.
Sorry I can't help more, cuz that's all I know about it. I just want people to make fun of my lack of SR knowledge so I can learn too.

Sorry, I didn't mean to say that 180sx blacktop motors have more power potential over redtops...the older sr's (such as the redtops and 180sx blacktops) have more power potential over the newer sr20det engines normally found in the s14 and s15. I'm not exactly sure why...it's just something i've heard from a lot of people and a lot of different sources.

it has to do with the intake manifold runners. IIRC, the older S13 intake manifold is placed higher, with a straighter path of air directly into the head/ chamber.

i have a 98 blacktop Sr from a 180 type X in my s14.

You probably won't be able to specify what year you want when buying your motor. However if you specify you want an s13 blacktop the oldest motor you'll get would be a 95-96. Either way I always reccomend the s13 blacktop for people that arn't rebuilding their sr's right off the bat. It saves you from possible headaches in the future.

You won't have any problem installing the motor. It's exactly like the redtop just newer.

G'luck!
