I recently purchased an 04 RX-8 with just under 30K miles in the odo, got a pretty good deal. paid cashed thanks to some saving i did since i started working and my family who put in what i put in . 8K i put in, so they equaled what i put in another 8K
thats my daily now, but i want to get a cheap track car, i was looking into an ad i saw locally here are the specs.
"1990 nissan 240sx, 131k miles, clean title, sohc, ac, ps, pw, cc, ps, ADVAN wheels and tires, JIC coilovers, h4 headlight convertion, RED PAINT not stock, 3 inch catback, guages, new belts, runs great, weld diff. panasonic cd player, 2 12's and amp."

$4500? Wow. For a SOHC car that's a shitload. Any engine swap you do will require a lot of DOHC parts too.
I wouldn't pay a dime over $2500 for it, but the market out there is obviously more retarded.

Pricey IMO, Ive seen it posted on local forums. 2400 would be my max. Face it only thing its got going is some wheels and paint.

I would think you could go up to 3500 and still be getting a square deal.
decent pain, everything power related working, 130*** miles, advan rims and coil overs. 3500 is a god price for it.
4500 is a little high, although I am sure his investment is more than that.
stock hatches go for almost 2K here in LA.
So make the offer 3000. but dont feel bad paying 3500. It has all the initial track mods done already.
(just thinking realisticly, imo)

2k ish..... alot of the parts he has are arent all that great other then the coil-over... but for that car.3k should be good...

Blah blah blah. For 4k you can find sr swapped cars in better shape.

the only plans i have for the 8 is some lowerin springs, and rims
dont want that rotary to give up on me in 70K or so miles cuz its my daily and as a kid with no school in the summer
its basically my ticket to go to cali every weekend.

i bought my '91 s13 coupe w/ 157k for $2.5k w/ aftermarket deck and speakers, a few months back. this thing is def. overpriced

05-28-2008, 01:17 AM
I would offer him $2,500, and pay no more than $3,000.
Why?
1. its a sohc
2. it has nothing special except rims and exhaust (cd player is worth nothing if he takes it out and tries selling it separately. Plus the stock one would have broken by now so it's general maintenance.)
3. paint job is general maintenance too, if it had a crappy paint job it wouldn't be worth shit.
4.It's a 1990 (its 18 yrs old)
I could keep going but I wont
Just make sure to do your research, find out if it's an SE or an LE etc. Make sure you know what the differences are in the models. Read up on the car and know some of the specs etc.
I've ran into too many guys selling these cars claiming the had sr's or s14 ka's and all kind of racing stuff on them but when you go and look at it none of that shit is on it. A lot of people don't know anything about these cars when they sell them except they have gotten popular, or know too much and are hoping the buyer knows jack shit.
Good luck with your car shopping, and like I said DO YOUR RESEARCH and don't jump on the first one just because it's there.(unless it's a really good deal, its clean and drives nice.)

FYI.
1989-1990 = 1.5-2.75k MAX (sohc OBD1 BOO!)
1991-1994 = 2k-3.5k MAX (dohc)
1995-1996 = 3k-4.5k MAX (dohc)
1997-1998 = 5k-8k MAX(dohc)
Any SR swapped s13 chasis = 4k+ depending on mods etc.
Any SR swapped s14 chasis = 5k+ depending on mods etc.

drift tax ftl I wouldn't pay a dime over 2.5k for that
ByeByeSti
05-28-2008, 06:36 AM
^ i second that, i wouldnt pay anymore then 2.5k for it. theres really nothing special about it besides the coilovers. its sohc, other words the thing cant get out of its own way.... find an sr'd.rb'd, ka-t'd, coupe or hatch. and buy that. cuz you can still find those for around your price range..

I love single cams
no lie
but that car is worth maybe $2k tops, to me at least. Those wheels are horrid.
TA's RX-8 is like the only cool one in existance Aaron, don't encourage someone to build another shitty RX-8 for me to have to look at.

This guy knows whats up!
Oh wait. No he doesn't.
$4500 is pretty steep. $3500 is also really pushing it.
It's worth different amounts to different people really. I'd never pay more the $2500 for the CLEANEST SOHC. Unless it was a Two tone coupe.
With what is on that car the most I'd pay for that hatch would be like $2800. But hatched have a lower value to me personally because I prefer a coupe.
I'd keep looking if I were you. Unless he's really willing to negotiate.

That car looks like a huge piece of shit.
I would offer him $1.9k.
Not a dime more.

It also depends on the type of tracking you wish to do with the vehicle considering that it has a welded diff, you would absolutly suck trying to grip.
I would be willing to pay 3.5k for the car considering the nice paint//wheels//coilovers.
but a cent over that is rediculous for a SOHC.

theres generally two prices when it comes to 240s.
1. The price that people pay who don't know the value of 240s
2. The price people pay who do know the value of 240s.
IMO if that car is super duper mint and super clean it is worth 4500. if you are buying the car just to track it though, it aint worth 4500 causey ou're most likely going to damage the car and stuff.
But, say If you buy a stock hatch for 1500 and get JICs, that's about 2500 right there so. I think that price though is high for a non cali s13.

Just remember. When all these people are telling you that you can get a SR20 car for 4K. The car is usually beat, and the SR has just as many miles as a KA, so just as likely to blow. And they blow quite often. I gotta alot of friends with numerous blocks and heads in thier garages.
Someone above said paint and stereo are general matenece, but YOU still would be paying for it if you didnt buy it done.
My cheaps paint 800
my cheap stereo 100
non cracked dash 100
a clean interior on a 18 year old car is worth a bit too. I know your using it for the track, but the interior is a example of how the rest of the car (ie. engine) has been treated.
And I run a rebuilt, 100% stock SOHC, and it kills it!!! great torque !! and I am gonna turbo soon :)

Paint? lol. For the price he is asking, the OP could buy another car and have it painted any color he wants.
Wheels? Look like ass.
Coilovers? Most likely blown. Even if not, they are only worth 800~ used at most.
And don't even get me started on tracking a car with a welded diff. I'm sick of people talking out of their ass.

Uhh. You're trippin. If you keep your eyes open, you can find reliable 4k cars easy if you give it some time.

yea my roomate just picked up a 90 hatch with S14 SR for 2800. pretty low miles too. like 40k or so

^Its a rebuilt SR ??
And i agree with ZAR! on the welded diff thing. I Grip my car with a welded quite a bit. Its all about driver. the welded is fine :)
A good example for buying a car is the craigslist in your area. and also look through all the 240 forums.

^^^I would have to agree. Those rims are nasty, and the car has already been personalized by someone else. Find a clean stock one. If you want a hatch and are willing to pay that kind of money try to find one a couple years newer. I see clean ones all the time and they are always being driven by old people. You're better off looking in the classifieds in your local area then a forum where the car has been raped by twenty different 18 yr olds.
just my 2 cents
