im getting the itch. i was in one once, long time ago. but i dont really remember much. i wouldnt mind getting one. with prices falling below the 20k mark for early C5's, its not out of the question. only issue being, i would much prefer to trade my S14 for one. but because most owners are older, i dont see that happening.
but main reasons being. LS1 + boltons/heads/cam = like whoa. drivability is good still. 18" CCW classics. not much else to do to make a serious performer/looker.
just curious, what do you guys think??

Have you ever driven or sat in one?
Seriously it's one of the poorest engineered vehicles I've been in. And talk about rickety. The only one I've ever driven it was real clean and low miles. Back in like 98 or so. Going around turns it sounded like a wooden roller coaster.
That's just my experience with'em though.

Great choice. One of the best bargains right now no doubt. might as well go all the way and get a z06.
Only reason I see not to get one now, would be because they seem to depreciate rather quick at a steady rate. A yr or two from now, (esp with the gas prices), they may drop even further. I was contemplating trading my subaru for a c5 z06 2 yrs ago. They sold for a 28-35k back then.
Only thing I don't like are the stock seats, but it's not something the after-market can't fix.

sure the car has its faults. but the positives by far, outweigh the negatives. that and im really growing tired of my car. its been a long haul, and ive spent a shit ton of money on it. i need to stop. haha. my car is actually at the shop... getting tuned with 650cc's, AFPR, and a GT3071R. not to mention, it has a seibon trunk, and the matching hood is in my garage. all i really wanted was low 400whp out of this RB25. i might finally get it, but i think it might be too late. i would just really prefer to have a nicer car from the start. iono. you guys think a trade would be out of the question?? am i assuming my car is much more spectacular than it actually is? the basics. 97 with 50k on it. 400+ whp via RB25 + GT3071R + EMS. stance coils + wilwood 4 pots. blah blah. im probably dreaming.

outside for me they look good, but the interior doesnt look much different from any late 90's gm car though, and the rear leaf spring suspension...eh, i'd still rock one.

My dad has a c6 vette too. Its his daily and he loves it. I've raced it a few times and its so much fun. My fiance doesnt even mind the drive and its perfectly quiet inside and the stock sound system is great. I have driven a ton of vettes (autoX mostly, but also as a valet) and the C5zo6 have the same whp as the new C6 vettes and they are soooo cheap now. By far the best car for the money, can out drive any BMW m3 thats modded, and the z06 gets like 25-30 mpg. As soon as i get done with grad school I am getting a z06, they are just so badass!

lucky7 - A trade is out of the question IMO...it will be hard to find someone willing to trade a C5 Vette for an older import. Unless by some streak of luck, this guy is now into Nissan or has a thing for imports.

If you can get one, get it. I've seen C5s (non-Z06s) going for $22-28K and they had pretty low mileage on them. The norm for Z06s seem to be mid 30's-$40K. I'd love to own a 2004 C5 Z06. Hell I'd even settle for a 99-01 FRC. I personally prefer the C5s styling over the C6. Their interiors don't bother me. Aftermarket seats and Caravaggio interior upgrades would fix that. Same goes for wheels. I'd rock Volk GT-S wheels. Everybody rocks HREs, BBS, CCWs, etc.
I wanna see somebody photoshop that! Silver or black Z06 on gunmetal or black Volk GT-Ss. You'll get + rep from me.

the best part about a vette, is that it holds its value far better than any other domestic. save for the lower production cars like the ford GT.

Along the same lines, you may consider an LS1 F-body. Spare me the LOLCAMEROMULLET jokes and hear me out for a second :) I remember hearing reports of them actually marginally outperforming Vettes of the same year, stock for stock (in a straight line). The Vette's handling is obviously going to be superior, but the F-bodies don't necessarily handle like complete turds. Gas mileage is virtually identical between the two. Personally, I really like the way they look with a little drop and some decent wheels.
There's a guy trying to sell his '00 Camaro SS locally. 25K miles, 383, all the bolt-ons, nearly 500WHP, still gets ~25mpg highway, priced at $14K. Makes me want to just give in and quit fucking around with imports.
The Vette is definitely the superior car, and it really depends what you're looking for...but it is a big price difference.

I think the 01-02 models received the LS6 intake manifold, not the actual engine itself.
I remember seeing a T/A with an LS2 on Cardomain but the site is down atm. Must've been some rare factory option.

If they came from the factory with anything but an LS1, it would have been a super-rare option. Like, even more rare than the 1LE package (which was only made for 1 or 2 years and production numbers were in the double digits). '01 or '02 they got a bump in power, I think, so that's probably the LS6 intake manifold.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_LS_engine
The version fitted to the 2004 Pontiac GTO was rated at 350 hp (261 kW) and 365 ft·lbf (494 Nm) of torque, which incidentally is what most US-spec LS1s made regardless of their advertised rating.[citation needed] Beginning in 2001, the LS1 received the higher-flowing intake from the LS6 and a milder camshaft to keep power at the same level; this also allowed GM to remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system (Camaro/Firebird only; 97-00 Corvette LS1 never used an EGR system). The block is very similar to that of the higher-output LS6; beginning in 2002, some LS1 engines were actually built using the LS6 block instead. The LS1 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 1998. Applications:

Ok so I drove a bone stock c6 today.
Handling isn't as sharp as my evo but goddam there's power all over the damn place.
I mean like, off the line, boom power. Are you cruising at 2k rpm? Want power? Here's a fucking punch in the gut full of torque and power. Want to slide your vette around a corner? No problem. Drop the pedal like last night's panties and countersteer.
Then I got a ride in a 450whp C5 on R compounds. Fuck me. I'm in love. The C5 was balls out a ridiculous monster. Want to take a girl out on a date and make her clothes fall off on the way to your bedroom? No problem, just hammer the throttle in this car on the way home. If the sheer torque doesn't rip her clothing clean off, I don't know what will. And it still gets 27mpg.
I'm sold.

For anyone that has GT5 Prologue...the tuned Z06 has some nice TE37s on it...its so hot. I wish I can take screenshots. -_-
i would love to have a vette but thats ganna have to be later down the road. My insurance would rape me.
for thoes who plan on geting a vette ... check out APS tt kits for the bad boy.. low boost (8psi i think) on a standard c6 makes almost 700 whp on pump gas!
http://www.airpowersystems.com/corvette/c6.htm
That reminds me of an Aussie turbo kit that might be available for the G8 GXP.
I don't get why the turbos are placed under the chassis like that. Seems like they would get awfully dirty. :ugh:
Either way that is a badass setup for the regular C6.
Nice post Daniel....very convincing to me to look at these cars.

GTO!!! fast as/faster than c5 vette, and not as many around im pretty sure, newer, and cheaper, mostly low mileage and probably still under warranty. although looks maybe not so much, i think with a front lip, slammed, flush wheels, wangan stlye wing, dual blast pipes and all blacked out it'd look fucking rad.

both will run mid to low 13's stock. the goat has 50 more hp, but it's also about 500 pounds heavier. also, it looks like a bonneville coupe or something. and it doesn't handle worth shit

yup, i came very very close to buying one(GTO) but the shifter and the handling killed it. ending up buying the Mazdaspeed3. i only wish i could have waited to test drive the Cobalt SS turbo.
several C5s on ebay right now for right at 20k with relatively low miles... most of them are auto unfortunately.

my old roommate had an Ion Redline, i thought it was gay until we drove it to california and back. 205hp supercharged, 30mpg on our trip (except for PCH where we averaged about 17 and burned off a quarter inch or so of tire), and it handled alright for a FWD. he paid more than a c5 vette would cost, though. so fuck that
i dont think its easy to "slam" a vette, they dont have springs
plus it looks retarded (at least, the slammed one in post 71 does, but i think it's a photoshop). the vette is an engineering marvel as it sits, no need to fuck with it

Wow I can't believe I missed this thread!
My dad has a black on black C5 Z06 that myself and A&A Corvette have modded (now he takes it to a shop cause I live further away) to about 560rwhp @ 6psi. Vortech blower, intercooler, radiator, headers, high flow cats, and a FPR. That's about as much as you can do with stock internals.
To dispel a few myths - Vettes have transverse leaf springs... it's the weirdest fucking thing you've ever seen. The spring connects between the LCAs, and ride height is determined with these endlinks that look straight off a S-chassis sway bar. Lengthen the endlink = lower ride height. I slammed my dad's z06, it looks dope.
Oh, and there's a piece of frame rail that runs right up underneath the lic plate in the front that we attached rollers to, so whenever my dad's old ass bottoms out the car, nothing scrapes. It's the shit.
Wheels wise, Vette offsets suck. Stock C5 Z06 fitment is like 17x9.5, 18x11, but the offsets are like +50 and +70. And you can't roll fenders, cause everything is fiberglass.
The coolest thing about z06's is not the engine. It's the brakes and handling. Hauling the car down from 150 coming into a corner is mind-blowing. You have no idea what 1G turns are like in a S-chassis, unless you're PJ or Sasha (from ZT), etc, and have a fully legit race car. Oh, and electronic assists that have a "competition" mode, and actually help you? Yeah. The Z06 is the best handling car I've ever driven. Makes a great benchmark for tuning my S-chassis toys, too.
Ending thought - if you were going to keep a C5 stock, spend a few extra grand and get the z06. If you want to upgrade everything, save the cash and get an early hardtop (looks like a Z06), or a coupe (with the removable top). No 'verts unless you want to pay out the ass and have a bad handling whale of a vette.
I'll hopefully be bringing my new S14 and the Z06 (on cheap tires, not $500/ea) to ASB this year, btw :)

I saw someone mentioned the modified Corvette from Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero (I had the JPN version), and also a mention of someone who has a special contract with Ray's for Corvette-sized TE37's.
In both cases, it is this company, WEST:
http://www.westcorvette.co.jp/newest.html
They have lots of cool stuff for Corvettes, particularly C4 ZR1s, and they have campaigned a number of Corvette race cars in Japan, some of which are occasionally for sale.
EDIT: Here's a big "for sale" pic on their site that includes a shot of a C6 Z06 with gold TE37s:
