View Full Version : Another VLSD question

I know this stuff has been covered to death - but I've been searching and can't find a solid answer. I've killed my 180sx vlsd / axles after many miles of abuse (70k+) and i need a replacement. There is clicking from the rear at lower speeds / under load and maaaad play in the diff. Also diff doesn't lock anymore *at all* except randomly in the rain. Trying to figure out what to get.
I got a few questions:
1) Will Z32 Axles fit a stock S14 (with Z32 vlsd of course) or do I need J30 axles?
2) What's the difference between Z32 and J30 axles?
3) What is the gear ratio on a R33 VLSD. I've heard GT-R = 4.11, GTS = 4.36. Dunno if that's correct?
4) ECR33 is GTS and BNR33 is GTR, correct?
5) apparently the r33 vlsd I'm looking at is from a car that had an RB25DET. Were there non-GTR cars that had the DET? would that mean that it has a 4.11 rear or 4.36?

I don't know about the other stuff but the r33 gts-t diff/axles are direct bolt ons for the s14. In fact you won't even have to change your driveshaft in non vlsd/abs s14's because the diff doesn't have that abs sensor. 4.36 is the right gear ratio iirc. The 5 bolt axles are a better stronger design too. I like this set up in my car. It should bolt up into an s13 if you get the mounting hardware from an s14 and change the rear cover which btw is identical to the s14 cover.
Hope I helped a little.

What's your setup?
N/A KA?
how's your RPMs @ 75 mph?
is 4.36 noticeably different from 4.08 (stock)?

2) What's the difference between Z32 and J30 axles?
3) What is the gear ratio on a R33 VLSD. I've heard GT-R = 4.11, GTS = 4.36. Dunno if that's correct? A Manual non GT-R is a 4.08 same as S14
4) ECR33 is GTS and BNR33 is GTR, correct? BCNR33

I just added after the questions

Where did you find your data? I may have been misinformed on the gear ratio.

I've dealt with over 200 LSDs in the past 2 years.

Don't take offense but there are a lot of other sources saying otherwise.

yeah looked at that already... doesn't answer everything. Anywho.. ended up ordering an R33 w/ axles. I'm set... this thread can be closed. The folks over at jhot were very helpful with explaining everything to me and the ordering process. :bigok:

Z32 axles do NOT fit. They're too long. That needs to be added so the next search run won't be misled.

Axles aren't discussed much, not like hubs, but you're right, the info is out there, has been for years.

I've got the part #'s for the boots incase you get the desire to rebuild the r33 axles before you put them on your car. I did, I'm kinda anal about doing things once and being done with it.
