What Your Car Color Reveals About Your Psyche

by Rick Newman
Well, if there are, chances are they're driving a green car.
People who own emerald green automobiles, it turns out, have the most positive attitude about the course of their own lives.
Dark blue and silver are other colors chosen by upbeat people.
Red supposedly connotes an aggressive, high-speed personality, while yellow, theoretically, is for folks with sunny dispositions.
But survey data show that people who drive red or yellow cars have below-average confidence. And black cars, supposedly a sign of power and elegance, are driven by the most downbeat drivers of all.
The automotive color-coding comes from CNW Marketing Research in Bandon, Ore., which asked nearly 1,900 Americans about their attitudes toward their own lives at several points over the course of a year.
CNW also asked each respondent the color of the car they drive most often, which allowed the researchers to develop a kind of color-confidence index.
People whose car is:Have confidence that is:Emerald green5.5% above averageDark blue3.2% above averageSilver1.2% above averageWhiteAverageSunny yellow3.7% below averageOrange4.1% below averageBright blue5.5% below averageBright yellow8.3% below averageRed8.8 % below averageBlack14.6% below average
Since the folks at CNW got a range of answers for each respondent over time, they were also able to calculate the "moodiness" of drivers—how widely their confidence varied from one extreme to the other, in the course of a year.
Sedate colors, not surprisingly, correlate with consistent moods. But if a primary color suddenly fills your rear-view mirror—well, it's probably best to get out of the way:
There are better clinical indicators of mental health, needless to say, but Art Spinella of CNW says car color can be a useful "people-matching" tool.
"Your accountant should drive something silver," he advises.
And odds are pretty good that he does: Silver, white, and black—more stable hues—are the most common car colors, according to DuPont, which publishes an annual color popularity report.
More moody colors account for about 17 percent of cars.
If only they had their own roads.

I just buy silver cars not because I have an 'upbeat personality'. It's just that I'm too lazy to wash my car all the time.
I'm not convinced of that 'report' at all. There's so many ways you could interpret something so vague as color preference.

:bs:

I don't think that article serves any relevance to anything at all...

At least for any members on this forum, because we all are forced to buy used cars, particularly cars in a color we may or may not be fond of.

I got stuck with a burgandy (red) car and I'm not particularly any of those moods, or attitudes.

I've never bought a new car, or sent one to a professional painter. Therefore I've never gotten to choose the color of my car.

This report is a load of BS generalizations.

Super cars compensate for small penises.
Trucks with 18" Lift Kits and 40" tires compensate for sleeping with your cousin.
Donks compensate for small brains.

See? Anyone can make up a "Report"

Dammit I own a white car and a black car. What do I do?????

Personally I think this is less likely to be accurate if your interviewing owners of used motor vehicles. Shit I'll take a low mileage, good running, clean body "fill in the blank" in ANY color for the right price.

I have another theory anybody who picks the color they really like is a happy driver! It has about as much relevance as that stupid survey.

"Red supposedly connotes an aggressive, high-speed personality"

"But survey data show that people who drive red or yellow cars have below-average confidence."

While it may not apply to everyone, it applies to me. How odd. But red really isn't my first choice when it comes to picking out a car.

How about more so the color you WANT your car to be rather than what it is right now? Some of us probably grabbed our cars because of the condition, not the paint color.

I have a black car now but eventually I want to go red.

I dont like colors for the most part lol. I think cars look best in black, white, or sometimes gray. My cars have been:
civic: gray
integra: white
240: white
350z: black
What does that mean? im stable?

*edit* ooo post 300

Who buys a car for color? For me, thats the LAST thing on the list of importance behind condition, mileage, price, and location.

The only color car I WILL NOT BUY is red. Because I dont feel like getting pulled over twice a week.

eh.. I've always bought cars in whatever color they happened to be in because thats what was available..
79 Dodge Ramcharger - White (First vehicle.. no choice in color it was FREE)
94 Nissan Pickup - Dark Grey (Smokin deal, bought it used.)
02 Nissan Sentra - Radium (silver) (Only model I could get that had the engine and trim package I wanted unless I wanted to special order)
88 Dodge Ramcharger - blue (Needed a vehicle ASAP, got a good deal on it $500)
06 Ford F-150 - Black (Got a great deal on it 6k o.g. miles, $15900)

I think it takes a special personality to intentionally drive a yellow car. (in my opinion)

Well, my bike is black, and I painted it that color.. I do have no confidence.. so maybe the poll has some amount of accuracy?
